Strange disease makes young man unable to stand the heat

VnExpressVnExpress02/03/2024

The 19-year-old boy has ectodermal dysplasia syndrome, which causes him to lose sweat and cannot go out in the sun. His skin is always dry. He has no teeth and has had to wear dentures for the past 8 years.

The disease left the young man without hair and eyebrows, and affected his fingernails and toenails. He had been treated in many places but could not be cured. His grandfather, father, and brother also had similar symptoms.

He went to the Central Dermatology Hospital for examination and was diagnosed by Professor Tran Hau Khang with hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED). When a normal person is exposed to the sun or a high temperature environment, the body will regulate body temperature by sweating. But this young man has no sweat glands or his sweat glands are atrophied, so he cannot withstand the heat, causing his body temperature to rise and his whole body to feel uncomfortable.

Patients are treated symptomatically but not cured.

HED is a genetic disease caused by gene mutations, with an incidence rate of 1/10,000-1/20,000. This disease was included in the book Rare Skin Diseases by Professor Khang, published by the Central Dermatology Hospital on February 29.

Over 40 years of work, Professor Khang has discovered dozens of strange and rare diseases in Vietnam and the world . According to him, rare skin diseases have 4 groups. The first group is genetic, accounts for the highest rate (60-80% of all rare skin diseases) and appears earliest in life (about 80% appear from childhood). This is the group that is difficult to treat, persistent, and causes the most serious complications.

The second group is caused by infections (bacteria, viruses, fungi). The third group is neurological and mental disorders, which are rarely noticed because the disease manifests on the skin but is not detected. These include diseases such as hair pulling, Morgellons, and bloody sweat (Vietnam has only discovered 3 cases)... The symptoms of this group of diseases are compulsive disorders, hair pulling, hair eating leading to intestinal obstruction... To detect and treat this disease, it is necessary to coordinate with dermatology, neurology, and psychiatry.

The fourth group is very complex, the cause of the disease is unknown, it includes many aspects of the disease, and it is difficult to treat. The treatment regimen only addresses the symptoms, and when it goes away, it relapses.
