Erosion caused by sea waves, eating deep into the mainland, is threatening the Ngu Ong Temple - a structure closely associated with the spiritual life of fishermen in Thanh Hai village, Bac Trach commune.

On the southern bank of the Gianh River estuary, passing through Thanh Xuan village (Bac Trach commune), sea waves continuously erode, causing landslides deep into the mainland, directly affecting the lives and production of local people. Worryingly, the landslides are threatening the Ngu Ong Temple - a structure closely associated with the spiritual life of fishermen.

Mr. Hoang Van Hai, Head of Thanh Xuan village, said that previously, the distance from the Ngu Ong temple yard to the sea edge was about 200m, but after many storms, big waves and high tides have washed away most of the sand, causing landslides to eat deep inside, making the temple now only a few steps from the wave edge. The stone embankment was cracked by the waves, the sand was strongly eroded, and the landslide area is increasingly expanding. The whole village currently has about 450 households with nearly 1,800 people in the threatened area.

Faced with this risk, the local people and authorities can only temporarily overcome it by pouring reinforced boulders to limit landslides. However, this solution is not capable of long-term resistance to sea waves and high tides every time a storm comes. According to statistics, the entire Bac Trach commune has about 7 km of eroded coastline, of which nearly 1 km in front of Ngu Ong Temple is at an alarming level.

In the North of Gianh River estuary, serious erosion is occurring along the coast of Bac Gianh ward ( Quang Tri ), in many places it has eaten into the mainland from 20-30m, directly threatening the coastal road and residential roads.

Ms. Duong Thi Thu Hien, Chairwoman of Bac Trach Commune People's Committee, said that in the face of the urgent situation, Bac Trach Commune has proposed Quang Tri Province to invest in building a 1km long solid embankment to protect the Ngu Ong Temple area. This proposal has been agreed by Quang Tri Provincial People's Committee and included in the Medium-Term Public Investment Plan for the period 2026-2030, with a total investment of 160 billion VND from the Central budget. People hope that the State will pay attention and soon allocate capital to implement the project, helping to stabilize their lives and long-term production.

In the north of Gianh River estuary, landslides are also occurring seriously along the coast of Bac Gianh ward, with a length of about 4.5 km, in some places 20-30m deep into the mainland, directly threatening the coastal road and residential roads. Due to the impact of storm No. 10, large waves have hit the edge of the residential road; if a strong storm continues, this road may be severely damaged, causing traffic disruption. In the absence of a plan to maintain, reinforce or build a protective embankment, the risk of landslides will continue to spread, affecting the coastal road project being implemented in the area.

Mr. Nguyen Van Tinh, Chairman of Bac Gianh Ward People's Committee, said that since the beginning of 2025, the weather has been extreme, storms have appeared with high frequency, making the erosion situation increasingly serious. Landslides are threatening essential infrastructure works along the coast, directly affecting people's lives and property. The ward government has proposed the Provincial People's Committee to promptly deploy emergency response measures and invest in building a coastal protection embankment to ensure people's safety and long-term stability of the Bac Gianh coastal area.
