3.5m high wall collapsed during house demolition, 1 person injured

While being dismantled, the wall of a house on Mau Than Street, Xuan Khanh Ward, Ninh Kieu District ( Can Tho City) suddenly collapsed, crushing two motorbikes and slightly injuring one person.


On the afternoon of March 15, a house wall collapsed near the intersection of Mau Than - 3/2 - Tran Hung Dao streets, Xuan Khanh ward, Ninh Kieu district, Can Tho city.

Initial information, at 2:00 p.m., a group of three workers were dismantling a wall 3.5 meters high, 5 meters wide and about 6 meters long.

When a worker cut a crossbeam, the wall suddenly collapsed, bricks, concrete and steel spilled out onto nearly half of Mau Than Street and crushed two motorbikes parked nearby.

Bricks, concrete and steel spilled out onto the street but fortunately did not hit any passersby.

The collapsed wall also slightly injured a worker's hand and head, while two co-workers were lucky to escape.

It is known that this house is among the cases of demolition and handover of the site for the People's Committee of Ninh Kieu district to renovate the intersection of Mau Than - 3/2 - Tran Hung Dao (intersection number 1) which was just started on March 12.

The above intersection is part of the project to renovate 5 central intersections in Ninh Kieu district, including: intersection No. 1 (Mau Than - 3/2 - Tran Hung Dao); intersection No. 2 (Mau Than - Nguyen Van Cu - Vo Van Kiet); intersection No. 3 (Nguyen Van Linh - Nguyen Van Cu); intersection No. 4 (Nguyen Van Linh - 3/2) and intersection No. 5 (Nguyen Van Linh - 30/4).

The project is divided into two phases. Phase 1 will expand the intersection at the same level, controlled by traffic lights, arrange independent right turns, with the following items: Renovation and expansion of five intersections, sidewalks, trees, public lighting system, rainwater drainage system, fire protection water supply system, traffic signals, etc.

Phase 2 will consider arranging overpasses or underpasses according to traffic needs.

The project has a total construction investment of over 1,196 billion VND from the State budget, assigned to the People's Committee of Ninh Kieu District as the investor. Of which, the cost of site clearance accounts for a very large part. Only counting the two intersections No. 1 and 4, the part for site clearance is over 800 billion VND. Of which, intersection No. 1 is nearly 700 billion VND, intersection No. 4 is over 100 billion VND for 160 affected cases.

Regarding the construction investment phase and the project implementation plan, it will not exceed four years. Specifically, in two years (2023 - 2024), Ninh Kieu district will prioritize the implementation of two intersections with high traffic volume and frequent traffic jams, which are intersections 1 and 4.

In 2025, the following contents will be deployed in accordance with regulations. When necessary, the project will be adjusted accordingly.
