The red card in the friendly match between Vietnam and South Korea resulted in Bui Hoang Viet Anh being banned from playing. However, this penalty does not apply to the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, the Asian Cup or any other official tournament.
Bui Hoang Viet Anh received an unfair red card.
According to the disciplinary regulations of the International Football Federation (FIFA), players who receive a red card in a friendly match are only banned from playing in the next friendly match of the same level. Therefore, it is not until the Vietnamese team has a scheduled friendly match - which must be an official match of level 1 in the FIFA series - that Bui Hoang Viet Anh will be "suspended".
The next two official matches of the Vietnam team are both in the second qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup in Asia, against the Philippines and Iraq. Bui Hoang Viet Anh will continue to play for the Vietnam team if coach Troussier intends to use this player.
Bui Hoang Viet Anh is not banned from competing in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Vietnam lost 0-6 to South Korea. This result did not surprise anyone. Obviously, the difference in class between the two teams is still very large.
The situation that caused Bui Hoang Viet Anh to receive a red card happened in the 61st minute, right when the Vietnamese team kicked off after conceding the fourth goal. Viet Anh controlled the ball incorrectly, but he quickly corrected his mistake with a cut-off.
Son Heung-min charged in at high speed to put pressure on the Vietnamese defender. Bui Hoang Viet Anh's clearance sent the ball hitting Son Heung-min and bouncing away. The Korean star continued his momentum and collided with Viet Anh's supporting leg.
Malaysian referee Mohd Amirul Izwan Bin Yaacob determined that Bui Hoang Viet Anh had committed a foul and showed him a red card. The 1999-born midfielder was surprised and tried to explain to the referee that he had not committed a foul. The midfielder was right because Son Heung-min had not yet controlled the ball and Viet Anh had not made any proactive moves with his supporting foot.
Some players of the Korean team such as Son Heung-min, Hwang Hee-chan, Lee Jae-sung or Cho Gue-sung also came forward and explained to the referee. Notably, Son Heung-min explained that this was not a red card situation and asked to have the card removed, but the referee did not change his original decision.
