CFPB sues Comerica Bank

The US Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) on December 6 accused Comerica Bank (USA) of mistreating and ignoring vulnerable customers receiving federal subsidies.

According to Reuters, citing the CFPB statement, Comerica's providers intentionally disconnected more than 24 million calls from customers before they could connect with bank representatives. "By intentionally disconnecting millions of calls and illegally charging spam fees, Comerica increased its bottom line at the expense of Americans living on fixed incomes," CFPB Director Rohit Chopra said.

Comerica is also accused of imposing illegal terms of service on consumers who want to stop payments and failing to investigate illegal account issues.

For its part, Comerica Bank said: "Despite the company's efforts to provide important context, the CFPB has consistently ignored our arguments and documents."
