U.23 Vietnam expects more from the overseas Vietnamese team
In the U.23 Vietnam training session in October, coach Kim Sang-sik decided to include 3 overseas Vietnamese players, namely Le Viktor (Ha Tinh Club), Tran Thanh Trung (Ninh Binh Club) and Vadim Nguyen ( Da Nang Club).

Both Tran Thanh Trung and Vadim Nguyen were born in 2005 and are promising faces. Thanh Trung has played professionally since 2013, with 62 matches for Slavia Sofia in the Bulgarian national championship. Thanh Trung is in the top 3 best young players in Bulgaria in the 2024 - 2025 season and has played for many youth teams of this country.
Vadim Nguyen has a "quieter" CV, but also grew up from the FK Rostov (Russia) academy. He has a beautiful body (1.75 m tall), a versatile playing style when playing as both a central midfielder and a winger. The "multi-tasking", along with the direct, methodical, and neat playing style of Thanh Trung and Vadim are characteristics of talents trained in Europe.
However, both of their performances in the V-League are still modest. Vadim Nguyen has played 3 matches in the V-League, 1 match in the National Cup, all coming from the bench. Vadim Nguyen's total playing time is less than 90 minutes (only about 20-25 minutes/match).
Meanwhile, Tran Thanh Trung also played for a limited time, only about 15-20 minutes in the matches against Ha Tinh , Thanh Hoa and Hai Phong. The total playing time of the former Slavia Sofia player was only about 1 half.
In fact, it is not difficult to understand why both Thanh Trung and Vadim Nguyen struggled. Thanh Trung had difficulty with the hot weather in Vietnam. At the same time, the midfield with Hoang Duc and Duc Chien also played well, so there was no reason for coach Gerald Albadalejo to change.
At Da Nang Club, the pressure of fighting for relegation (the Han River team just ended a streak of 4 matches of draws and losses) made Mr. Le Duc Tuan not dare to take risks with a young talent of only 20 years old and inexperienced like Vadim Nguyen.
Playing in clubs with clear goals (winning the league or staying in the league) is always a huge challenge for young overseas Vietnamese. Cultural and climate differences can erode the physical strength and confidence of any overseas Vietnamese talent, no matter how promising.
Coupled with the pressure of having to compete with more experienced and familiar seniors in the V-League, young overseas Vietnamese players accept playing supporting roles, waiting for the day they can step into the light.
Seize the opportunity
That was the situation Le Viktor faced 2 years ago, when he returned to Vietnam to play for Binh Dinh Club. The Vietnamese-Russian also had to sit on the bench, then gradually asserted his position. Up to now, Le Viktor is an important factor for both U.23 Vietnam and Ha Tinh Club.
Perseverance, perseverance and relentless efforts are the only ways for young overseas Vietnamese to prove their abilities.
Before waiting for more opportunities to come in the V-League, both Vadim Nguyen and Tran Thanh Trung can take advantage of the October meeting to "score points" with the U.23 Vietnam coaching staff.
Coach Kim Sang-sik is always patient with young players.

Although coach Kim Sang-sik has handed over the coaching position to Mr. Dinh Hong Vinh, the Korean strategist still carefully studies the notes and assessments of his colleagues to monitor the training progress of U.23 Vietnam. Especially with Thanh Trung, a player that Mr. Kim affirmed that he had watched the video before and always highly appreciated his potential.
If they can show their abilities, Vadim Nguyen, Tran Thanh Trung or any new recruits will have a bright chance to go to SEA Games 33 and the 2026 AFC U23 Championship finals. Mr. Kim always opens the door for everyone, whether it is U23 Vietnam or the national team.
Importantly, young overseas Vietnamese need to seize the opportunity. The race will be activated right now.
