OpenAI has just announced a major update to ChatGPT, allowing users to interact directly with third-party apps like Spotify, Canva, or Zillow right in the chat window. This new feature promises to turn ChatGPT into a comprehensive “operation center” where users can work, play, and shop without leaving the conversation.

The update is being introduced alongside a new App SDK, which makes it easier for developers to integrate their products into ChatGPT. According to OpenAI, the first partners to join include Spotify, Canva, Coursera, Figma, Expedia, Booking.com, and Zillow. Other popular platforms like Uber, Instacart, and DoorDash will join the list in the near future.
Users can trigger apps by calling their name directly in the chat, for example: “Spotify, create a relaxing playlist” or “Booking.com, find hotels in Paris.” ChatGPT can also suggest relevant apps based on the context of the conversation – for example, if you’re discussing buying a home, the chatbot will suggest Zillow for interactive maps and real estate listings.

Using ChatGPT too much will make you feel... lonely
The underlying technology for this feature is the Model Context Protocol (MCP), which allows ChatGPT to connect to and mine data from a variety of tools. The SDK is currently open to developers in preview mode, and OpenAI plans to launch a developer directory and monetization program later this year.

Notably, all ChatGPT users – including Free, Go, Plus and Pro plans (outside the EU) – can experience this feature. This is considered an important step to help ChatGPT get closer to the goal of becoming a true “multi-purpose personal assistant”, able to support studying, working, booking, travel planning and even direct in-app purchases.
As AI continues to evolve, the lines between “chatbots” and “smart assistants” are blurring. ChatGPT is no longer just a place to chat, but is becoming the central platform for all of your digital activities – ushering in a future where you can do anything with just a conversation.
