ChatGPT's global user growth has begun to slow over the past month, with global downloads down 8.1% from September, even though October is only halfway through, according to data from analytics firm Apptopia.
ChatGPT's new user growth — measured by the month-over-month change in downloads — has slowed since April, suggesting the app's global expansion may be reaching saturation point, Apptopia said.
In the US, OpenAI’s key market, user engagement has also weakened significantly. The average time spent by each daily active user in the app has dropped 22.5% since July, while the average number of sessions per user has also dropped 20.7%.
These numbers reflect a trend of users using ChatGPT less frequently, even though they still keep the app on their mobile devices.
However, the US online technology news site TechCrunch emphasized that ChatGPT still maintains its dominant position in the artificial intelligence (AI) application market. Despite the slowdown, the application still records millions of new installs every day globally, a number that very few technology platforms can achieve.
According to analysts, this slowdown is not necessarily a negative signal, but could be a "natural stabilization" period after a period of explosive growth since OpenAI launched the mobile ChatGPT application.
If the early 2025 period marked the “AI fever” that swept the world , recent months can be seen as the time when the user market entered a more mature phase – where growth rates gradually decrease, but the quality and depth of use will determine the long-term future of AI technology.
