“The cleaning lady is as strong as iron and copper…”
On the occasion of October 20, Ms. Tran Thi Van, Gia Vien 2 Urban Environment Enterprise and the female workers of Hai Phong Urban Environment One Member Co., Ltd. still worked diligently, on time, on shift to keep the city center clean and beautiful.
It is difficult to describe all the hardships and difficulties of the urban environmental sanitation job that Ms. Van has been involved in for the past 26 years. Regardless of the weather, whether it is sunny or rainy, or the cold winter, every day she starts work at 4 pm and returns home when the day has changed. Starting from the garbage collection point at Quan Ngua Lake, she sweeps and walks and pushes her cart through many alleys on Le Loi Street, Chu Van An Street and Thanh Nien Street (Gia Vien Ward) to collect garbage.
Each shift, Ms. Van collects 5-6 trips, not to mention sweeping the sidewalks, streets and public places. Wherever she goes, the streets are clean. Not only collecting trash, she enthusiastically participates in promoting waste classification, contributing to creating positive changes in waste classification work in the area she is responsible for.
Ms. Van shared that the hardest days are rainy and stormy days, when workers have to work hard to clean the streets, sometimes taking several days to finish. They work from morning until midnight, then continue working hard the next morning until all the streets and alleys are neat and clean.
When storm No. 3 hit in September 2024, the entire company worked day and night for more than half a month. Meals were often just a sandwich or a package of sticky rice quickly swallowed on the roadside to get to work on time. In return for all that hard work, the city's landscape and environment became clean again, and Ms. Van and the urban environmental workers were all very happy.
Confiding her personal feelings, Ms. Van said that after many years in the profession, she has also gotten used to working on holidays and Tet. Her husband is in the same profession so he understands and shares. The children are also used to their parents being away from home on holidays and Tet so they have a sense of self-awareness and independence from an early age, knowing how to help their mother with housework. In particular, the company is very concerned and takes good care of the lives of the workers. That is a source of encouragement for her to work with peace of mind and stick with the job despite many hardships.
It is known that during her working time, Ms. Van has achieved the title of "Grassroots-level Emulation Fighter" for many consecutive years and received many awards, including a Certificate of Merit from the Chairman of the City People's Committee for her outstanding achievements in work in 2016.
Diligently beautifying urban green spaces
Also working in the public sector, every day from 7am, Ms. Dam Thi Bach Duong, a worker at Factory 4 (Hai Phong Green Park Joint Stock Company) is present on the road from Nguyen Trai, Le Hong Phong to Cat Bi airport to start taking care of the trees. Tilling the soil, planting trees, weeding, catching insects, pruning, watering, fertilizing... All the work requires meticulousness and diligence of the worker. Not to mention the hardships and dangers lurking due to the nature of the outdoor working environment, direct exposure to sun, rain, dust, and traffic safety.

Under the tilted conical hat, her thin hands nimbly trimmed trees on the green strip of Le Hong Phong street. While working, Ms. Duong shared about the job she has been attached to for over 20 years. “Taking care of flowers and urban trees is like taking care of a baby; it looks simple but it is also very elaborate, requiring experience and attention to every detail. Each type of tree and flower has different growth and development characteristics, so each step from planting, watering, pruning, and fertilizing needs to be done at the right time and in the right dosage so that the tree can grow well, produce beautiful flowers, and bloom on time…”, Ms. Duong said.
The busiest time of work is during the Lunar New Year. To prepare for the city to "change its clothes" to welcome spring, about 2 months before Tet, she and her colleagues work hard with almost no days off. They diligently take care of each flower bed, lawn, arrange and decorate flower pots in Nguyen Trai Flower Garden, and maintain regular daily care to keep the flowers beautiful throughout Tet. The work is tiring, sometimes exposed to cold rain, but when she looks back at the green, bright flowers and grass, with people rushing to "check-in", she feels happy.
Despite the hard work, her family's economic difficulties, and her own years of fighting illness, Ms. Duong always maintains an optimistic spirit, loves life, is passionate and responsible for her job. In her family, she is also a devoted wife and mother. Ms. Duong has two sons, the eldest son is a first-year student at Hanoi Medical University.
Talking about Ms. Duong, Deputy General Director of Hai Phong Green Park Joint Stock Company Bui Gia Bao assessed her as a typical example of the company in terms of determination in life and sense of responsibility for work. She always completes well all assigned tasks.
Silently responding to floods
Female drainage workers are no less hard-working. When it rains and storms, while everyone is looking for shelter, workers in the Hai Phong drainage industry, regardless of the danger, rush out onto the streets to work at pumping stations, tide-prevention sluices; collect trash on rivers, lakes, drainage ditches, and obstacles at drainage inlets...

As a female worker who has worked in the drainage sector for many years, Ms. Pham Thi Hue, a worker at Le Chan Drainage Enterprise (Hai Phong Drainage One Member Co., Ltd.) has gradually become accustomed to the difficulties and hardships of the job. She has to come into direct contact with waste and wastewater. Hot sunny days are already difficult, rainy and stormy days make the hardships and difficulties even more difficult...
But with the spirit of loving the job and wishing for the city to become cleaner and more beautiful, Ms. Hue and the workers and craftsmen working at Hai Phong Drainage One Member Co., Ltd. always work with the highest sense of responsibility, ensuring drainage for the city and supporting people when requested.
In recent times, sharing the difficulties and hardships of workers, especially female workers, Hai Phong Drainage One Member Co., Ltd. has paid attention to promoting the implementation of policies and welfare regimes for them in addition to the State's policies. Thereby, helping workers have a stable income and feel more secure in their jobs.
Simple wish
Ms. Van, Ms. Duong, Ms. Hue are representatives of female workers working in the city's public service sector - a special field with many difficulties and hardships. Each person has their own circumstances, but above all, they share an optimistic spirit, love for their profession, and responsibility for their work. The jobs seem simple but are very meaningful, contributing to preserving and beautifying the city.
When talking about the wishes of women in life on a special occasion like October 20 - the day to honor Vietnamese women, their wishes are simple but also beautiful, containing a noble humanitarian spirit. Always smiling, Ms. Tran Thi Van expressed: "I just hope that people have a higher awareness, throw garbage on time, in the right place. When I go on the street without seeing garbage, I am happy and feel that my job is very meaningful!"

“On the occasion of October 20 this year, I am personally very happy because in addition to receiving gifts from the company's leadership for all female officers and employees, the unit's leadership also created conditions and arranged reasonable work for the women to wear Ao Dai and leave beautiful images at work," Ms. Pham Thi Hue shared.
In particular, Ms. Hue wishes that Hai Phong city will be cleaner - more beautiful - more civilized and modern, people will be more aware of protecting the city's drainage works; promptly detect and denounce to prevent acts that are harmful to the environment and drainage system. The community will join hands to prevent the situation of dumping garbage and hazardous waste into manholes, sewers, ditches, and regulating lakes, causing blockage of the drainage system and environmental pollution...
As for Ms. Tran Thi Van, her greatest wish is for herself to overcome her illness, have the health to continue to work well, and take care of and educate her children to become useful people for society.
Each person has a different situation and job, but they all reflect the beauty of Vietnamese women.
