"Sold out" of monthly parking passes, students run everywhere looking for parking
Many students at the dormitory B of Ho Chi Minh City National University are having difficulty registering for monthly parking passes. The “running out of passes” has forced many students to park their vehicles by the day, which is costly and inconvenient in daily life.
The current monthly parking fee is only 50,000 VND/month, while daily parking costs between 3,000 and 7,000 VND/time, depending on the building and time. If you park overnight for a longer period, the fee can be up to 10,000 VND/time.
Normally, students in dormitories can register for monthly passes from the 1st to the 5th of each month if they want to. However, to get a spot, many people have to wait early and ask for information in advance.
“If there is still space, bring your car to register at the beginning of the month, otherwise it will be sold out. But strangely, even though the monthly pass is sold out, the car park still accepts daily parking,” Phong Dien shared.

Bich Lan, a first-year student at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh National University, said that after asking many times, she had just registered for a monthly card in early October but was not allowed to park her motorbike in the basement of her building.
“I have to park my car in area C5-C6, which is quite far from my building. I see that the parking lot there still has a lot of space, very spacious, but I don’t understand why every time a student comes over to ask, they say they ran out of monthly cards,” Thuy shared.
The “card shortage” situation has also forced many students to find ways to cope. Pham Pham, a first-year student at the University of Agriculture and Forestry, in building BA3, shared that she brought her car up late, so when she went to register, all the buildings said they were out of monthly cards.
Therefore, Pham still has to park his motorbike daily, 5,000 VND/time, if he travels a lot, he has to multiply the travel cost.
“It’s very expensive in the long run. People said that there are still vacancies in building C5-C6. When I asked, I still got the same answer: “The monthly pass is gone.” I asked the head of the building for support but haven’t received any response yet,” the female student recounted.
A similar story happened to Le Le, a student at the University of Economics and Law, Ho Chi Minh City National University. Le said: “At the beginning of October, I went to see the management board to register for a monthly card but was told that it was sold out.”
Expensive, inconvenient and affects daily life
Not having a monthly pass means students have to pay 4-5 times more than the fixed price. For those who have to park and go in and out multiple times a day, this cost becomes a burden.
“My family is not well off, so spending more than 200,000 VND per month just for parking is too much,” Toan shared.

The lack of a fixed parking space also affects the daily life and study schedule of many students.
“Every morning I have to wake up earlier to walk to another building to get my bike. If it rains or my bike is taken to another place, it takes even more time,” Bich Lan said.
In the same situation as Bich Lan, Toan said that every time he runs out of day passes, the first-year student has to find and leave them in buildings far from where he lives, causing many obstacles in terms of time and effort.
The shortage of monthly parking passes at dormitory B has lasted for many months, causing many inconveniences for students. Many opinions suggest that the management board should soon review the capacity of the parking lots, and at the same time publicly announce the number of vacant monthly passes, to ensure that it meets the actual needs of students.
Number of students increases, local vehicle registration cards run out
Speaking with Dan Tri reporter, representative of the Dormitory and Urban Area Management Center of Ho Chi Minh City National University admitted that there was a local "card shortage" in area B.
According to the Center, the dormitory currently has 47 buildings with more than 32,000 boarding students and 25 parking lots, with a design capacity of about 14,200 vehicles and a maximum actual capacity of more than 16,000 vehicles. However, in the 2025-2026 school year, the number of students bringing motorbikes increased significantly, leading to the above situation.
“By October, more than 16,000 students had registered for monthly parking, an increase of nearly 1,000 vehicles compared to last year, and more than 15,000 vehicles had been parked monthly. Currently, there are still nearly 1,000 student vehicles that have to be parked daily, mainly in area B, while some parking lots still have space,” said a representative of the Information Center.
The cause was determined to be the uneven distribution of parking spaces, causing some buildings to be overloaded while others were empty. The center explained that students often hesitate to park their vehicles in neighboring buildings 400-500m away. In addition, the monthly registration renewal time is not reasonable, some students do not pay attention to the renewal time so they have to park by the day waiting to register again.
To overcome the above situation, the Center said it has planned to expand and build more parking lots. Of which, from now until November 30, 4 temporary outdoor parking lots will be put into use at the BB, BE, AG and AH building clusters, accommodating about 2,900 vehicles.
In addition, the Center requires service units to publicly announce price lists and registration procedures and absolutely not refuse to keep vehicles for a month if there is space available, and to strictly handle violating employees to ensure fairness and transparency.
At the same time, the Center for Dormitory and Urban Area Management of Ho Chi Minh City National University will coordinate with Ho Chi Minh City Urban Railway Company No. 1 to sponsor Metro No. 1 tickets and encourage students to use public buses, in order to reduce pressure on personal vehicles in dormitories and Ho Chi Minh City National University Urban Area.
“The Center always considers the work of ensuring safety, security, order and the rights of students as the top priority. All feedback and wishes of students are recorded and considered as opportunities for us to better improve the work of managing and serving students,” emphasized the Center representative.
