Speaking at the ceremony, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Hoang Trung emphasized that this is a special event in the agricultural cooperation relationship between Vietnam and Australia, not only having commercial and technical significance but also demonstrating trust, understanding and aiming for sustainable development, for the benefit of farmers and consumers of the two countries.

Previously, in 2023, the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection (then the Plant Protection Department) received a notice from the Australian Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) to conduct a pest risk analysis on Vietnamese grapefruit. After two years of active coordination, the two sides completed the technical requirements and agreed to allow the import of fresh grapefruit from Vietnam to Australia.

Thus, grapefruit becomes the 8th fruit of Vietnam allowed to be exported to the Australian market, after dragon fruit, mango, longan, rambutan, lychee, star apple and passion fruit. In the opposite direction, blueberries are the 7th fruit of Australia imported into Vietnam, after grapes, oranges, tangerines, cherries, peaches and nectarines.

At the ceremony, representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment and the Australian Embassy signed the conditions for importing Australian blueberries into Vietnam and the Operational Work Plan - regulating the conditions for importing Vietnamese grapefruit into Australia. The two sides also shared about the potential for cooperation, regulations and technical conditions in the production, quarantine and import and export of fruits between the two countries.

Deputy Minister Hoang Trung said that Australia is becoming one of Vietnam's trusted and important partners in the global agricultural supply chain. In 2024, the two-way agricultural trade turnover will reach 2.24 billion USD. However, compared to the potential, the room for cooperation between the two sides is still very large.

The Deputy Minister requested Vietnamese agencies, localities and enterprises to strictly comply with Australian regulations on plant quarantine, traceability and food hygiene and safety; at the same time, increase training and propaganda for people, ensuring the quality and reputation of Vietnamese agricultural products in the international market.

On the Vietnamese side, the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection will continue to coordinate with specialized agencies to guide the establishment and issuance of codes for growing areas and packaging facilities, as well as implementing quarantine measures to ensure that exported grapefruit products meet the requirements of the Australian market.

From Vietnamese grapefruit and Australian blueberries, the two countries expect to open a new chapter in sustainable agricultural cooperation, contributing to deepening the Vietnam-Australia comprehensive strategic partnership.
