YouTube tests AI DJ like Spotify

YouTube has just launched “YouTube Labs” – a platform for testing new features, similar to Google Labs. One of the first features is AI Music Hosts, a version of Spotify AI DJs, which has started appearing for some YouTube Music users.

AI Music Hosts are able to recommend the next song, explain why it was chosen, and share interesting information about the artist. For example, the AI told us about the inspiration for Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off” and how she copyrighted some of the lyrics.

The feature is reminiscent of old radio shows with narrators. However, since the voice is AI and there is no real interaction, the experience can lack emotional depth.

Currently, AI Music Hosts is only available through YouTube Labs and requires a YouTube Premium account. Users in the US can sign up for a waitlist to test it.

Dot – automatic delivery robot

DoorDash just launched Dot, a small red robot that can drive itself on roads, bike lanes, and sidewalks at speeds of up to 20 mph. Dot is designed to look like a friendly cartoon character, with LED eyes and a mouth that opens to collect food. Dot is just under 5 feet tall, about 3 feet wide, and weighs 350 pounds. It can hold up to six pizza boxes or 30 pounds of groceries. Options like cup holders and a mini-fridge make Dot flexible for a variety of orders.

Dot uses eight cameras, four radars, and three lidar sensors to detect obstacles. Real-time AI helps it choose the optimal route for delivery. Each Dot runs on a removable battery that can be charged individually. This makes it easy for DoorDash to manage and maintain its fleet.

Dot is trained to yield to pedestrians and cyclists. If it encounters a problem, it will stop and wait for a human to come and help. DoorDash does not allow remote control, to ensure maximum safety.

Meta acquires AI chip startup

Meta is acquiring Rivos, a chip design startup, to bolster its efforts to develop in-house chips for artificial intelligence, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters.

Rivos, based in Santa Clara, California, and backed by Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan, focuses on chip design based on the RISC-V architecture – an open-source alternative to Arm, Intel, and AMD chip architectures.

Previously, in March, Reuters reported that Meta was testing its first self-developed AI chip, aiming to reduce infrastructure costs when using advanced AI tools. Currently, Meta still relies heavily on Nvidia's AI chips.

Rivos is seeking new funding at a valuation of more than $2 billion, according to a report from The Information. Bloomberg first reported the potential deal.
