Saving a patient with a rare duodenal rupture due to a traffic accident

Vinh Long General Hospital has just saved the life of a patient with a rare duodenal rupture caused by a traffic accident.

On August 20, Vinh Long General Hospital announced that it had just saved the life of a patient who suffered a rare duodenal rupture from a traffic accident.

Patient D.VT was discharged from the hospital after 10 days of treatment.

Accordingly, late on August 5, male patient D.VT (45 years old, residing in Mang Thit District, Vinh Long) was admitted to the hospital with severe abdominal pain in the right hip. According to records, the patient had a traffic accident 2 days ago, had facial abrasions and dull abdominal pain. The patient bought medicine on his own but it did not improve, the pain increased so he went to Vinh Long General Hospital for examination.

Through examination, the doctor of the General Surgery Department found that the patient's abdomen was as hard as wood, with the most pain in the right hip area, so he monitored the condition of a perforated hollow organ and ordered emergency laparoscopic surgery to find the injury.

Through endoscopy, doctors saw that the patient's appendix was congested, with a lot of cloudy fluid and pseudomembrane.

Dr. Tran Van Nhieu, Head of General Surgery Department, stated that the abdominal condition was very severe and did not match the signs of appendicitis, so he was advised to switch to open surgery to fully assess the injury.

The surgical team then dissected the right colon mesentery to expose the duodenum and found that there was a lot of bile and digestive juices in this area. After aspiration and careful examination, a section of the duodenum was found to have a hole about 3 cm in diameter. This was the cause of the patient's severe pain.

Doctors quickly sutured the hole and placed a duodenal drainage tube for the patient. After 4 hours of surgery, the patient was out of danger.

According to Dr. Nhieu, the duodenum is the first part of the small intestine, adjacent to the stomach and has a very important role in the digestive process, contributing to the absorption of nutrients for the body thanks to the bile system and pancreatic enzymes poured into it.

Duodenal rupture is a particularly serious, rare and difficult to diagnose emergency. Duodenal rupture can obstruct the flow of food, causing food as well as bile and pancreatic juice to spread in the abdominal cavity, causing rapid infection and poisoning.
