Former Japanese U23 coach leads Hanoi FC: Asian champion, Shin Tae-yong admires

VTC NewsVTC News13/02/2025

Joining Hanoi FC, Mr. Makoto Teguramori will become the coach with the best record ever leading the Capital team. He has worked for many years with the talented generation of Japanese football players - in which 2 typical representatives are Takumi Minamino and Wataru Endo, winning the Asian championship.

In 2016, Mr. Makoto Teguramori was appointed as the head coach of the Japanese U23 team to participate in the U23 Asian finals. The squad Mr. Makoto used at that time included some of Japan's top talents such as Wataru Endo, Shoya Nakajima, Takuma Asano or Takumi Minamino.

Japan U23 won all the group stage matches, conceding only 1 goal. Coach Makoto and his team were in a difficult group but still defeated Iran, Iraq and South Korea to win the championship and a place in the men's football event at the Rio Olympics 2016.

The opponent that Mr. Makoto defeated was Shin Tae-yong. After the final match, the coach of the U23 Korea expressed his admiration to his colleague: "It is true that the Japanese team's substitution decisions changed the match. I think I should give compliments to their coach."

At the Olympics, the 1967-born coach was still the head coach of Japan. The Asian champions played well. They only lost 4-5 to Nigeria (who later won the bronze medal) in the group stage. This defeat eliminated the Japanese Olympic team despite winning 4 points in the next 2 matches (draw with Colombia, win with Sweden).

Makoto continued to work for the Japan Football Association (JFA) as a youth coach and assistant coach of the national team. He was considered for the interim head coach position of the "Samurai Blue" when the JFA fired Vahid Halihodzic just before the 2018 World Cup.

Then, the person chosen was Akira Nishino. Mr. Makoto worked as assistant number 1, participating in the memorable journey of the Japanese team at the 2018 World Cup before leaving to start trying his hand at professional clubs. He led two mid-level J.League teams, V Varen Nagasaki and Vegalta Sendai, without outstanding achievements.

In 2022, Coach Makoto almost led the U23 Thailand. The coach born in 1967 still went to Thailand to work, but not with the national team, but with the clubs Pathum United and Chonburi.
