Da Nang overcomes the dirty scene at the sports palace

VnExpressVnExpress09/11/2023

The flying saucer-shaped Tien Son Sports Palace has been cleared of rubbish, weeds removed, paving stones replaced, and some dirty walls repainted.

Over the past two days, the Department of Culture and Sports of Da Nang has mobilized staff to clean up and beautify the landscape around the Tien Son Sports Palace, Phan Dang Luu Street, Hai Chau District, after VnExpress reported on the shabby and unsightly condition there.

Trash under the rainwater intakes, vents, and trash cans has been collected. Weeds in the hallways and second-floor lobby have been mostly removed. Some graffiti has been repainted.

By the afternoon of November 9, many broken or missing granite drain covers had been replaced. The department also installed more plastic trash cans and trimmed the grass in the area. However, many surrounding walls still had ugly graffiti. Rotten wooden benches were awaiting repair.

Explaining the reason for the shabby sports palace, Mr. Nguyen Trong Thao, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture and Sports, said that the outside of the palace is an open space, with internal traffic roads, parking lots, garden areas, trees, lawns... Because there are no fences or gates, this place has become a destination for people to exercise and have fun.

Some people lack awareness of protecting property and maintaining environmental hygiene. The Sports Center (the management unit) has arranged many trash bins around, security guards have been spreading propaganda and reminders, but there are still cases of littering in the wrong places and arbitrarily stuffing trash into drainage ditches.

In addition, some teenagers choose quiet times to draw pictures, write letters, and smear glass doors, protective walls, and decorative aluminum panels at the entrance of the stands; gather to play skateboarding and arbitrarily remove iron frames and granite panels covering the drains to create barriers to jump over. Some even skateboard on the granite seats of flower beds, slide on decorative aluminum panels, and collide with glass doors... causing damage to property.

Some employees of the City Green Park Company, after taking care of trees and lawns in the garden, arbitrarily left equipment, tools, and watering hoses in the basement's ventilation area.

Regarding subjective reasons, Mr. Thao said that the Department is organizing two national volleyball and chess tournaments, with a large number of people coming, so many cars are not allowed to enter the parking lot and are parked on the corridors of the walkways inside the sports palace. "Human resources are focused on the tournament, so there were shortcomings in the process of checking and fixing the problems in the outside space," Mr. Thao said.

In the coming time, the Sports Center will increase inspections to promptly handle damage; increase propaganda to remind people, students, and pupils to maintain public hygiene and be aware of protecting property; place more signs and instructions to create awareness for people to come to play and have fun.

The center also increased the number of cleaning staff (currently two people) to ensure quick waste collection; at the same time, it proposed to remove all rotten and peeling wooden seats; install more cameras in the area around the garden, walkways, first and second floor lobbies to manage, monitor and handle outside space restrictions.

Tien Son Sports Palace was built on a land area of 94,000 m2, in which the gymnasium block includes one basement and three upper floors, with an area of over 10,400 m2, designed to simulate the shape of a flying saucer. This is a typical project of Da Nang City, started in July 2009, with a cost of 42 million USD (about 750 billion VND according to the exchange rate at the same time). In December 2010, the project came into operation.

On average, each year, the Sports Palace organizes 12-14 city-level sports tournaments; 8-10 national, regional, and international sports tournaments; 5-7 sports tournaments and sports festivals of central and local departments and branches; 35-40 sports tournaments, events, and activities of various large and small scales.

This was the place where the National Sports Congress in 2010, the Asia Pacific Robocin competition, the final round of the Miss Vietnam contest, the Prime Minister's meeting and dialogue with 4,000 workers in the Central region; the APEC Coe Summit gala dinner within the framework of the APEC Summit in 2007...
