VNR leaders said that due to the impact of storm No. 11 (storm Matmo), the water level of the Thuong River rose rapidly and high in recent days. By the afternoon of October 10, the water level was 0.65m below the bottom of the beam, threatening the railway infrastructure.
Realizing that the water level was continuously rising, VNR quickly came up with a plan to mobilize 6 slag wagons to load onto the Thuong River railway bridge to increase the load capacity of this railway bridge, in order to counteract the water force when it is likely to rise and sweep away the bridge, especially the possibility of trees, wood, water vehicles being swept away, colliding... will increase the pressure on the bridge.

According to VNR's report, at the Song Thuong railway bridge (Km48+738) on the Hanoi - Dong Dang route, the water level was 1m from the bottom of the beam at 5:30 this morning. At 7:30, the water level remained the same (in 2024, when the railway was blocked, the water level was 0.85m from the bottom of the beam). VNR blocked the railway at Song Thuong bridge at 8:10 on October 8, when the water level was 0.95m from the bottom of the beam.
In addition, VNR has announced and coordinated with local authorities to ban road vehicles (motorbikes and non-motorized vehicles on both sides of the stage) at 8:30 am.
Previously, a representative of Ha Thai Railway Joint Stock Company, the unit managing the Hanoi - Thai Nguyen route, said that on the afternoon of October 9, floodwaters from upstream poured down strongly, sweeping away the entire foundation and ballast stone in the section passing through Trung Gia commune (formerly Soc Son), leaving two rails exposed in the air.
The landslide is 20-30 meters long, the soil underneath is eroded nearly two meters deep, creating a hollow hole right below the railway. According to VNR, the incident only affects the infrastructure because the Hanoi - Thai Nguyen route currently no longer operates passenger trains, only serves freight with a frequency of about 3-4 trips per month. The unit is coordinating with forces to inspect the scene, assess the extent of damage to fix when the water recedes, and is expected to reopen the route in the next 2-3 days.
