New Year's wish of Vietnam's number one female tennis player Nguyen Thuy Linh

(Dan Tri) - After precious days off with her family during the traditional Tet holiday, Vietnam's number one female badminton player aims to improve her position on the world rankings and head to the SEA Games in top form.

Notably, Thuy Linh only returned to Vietnam on the 27th day of the Lunar New Year when she had just participated in the Indonesia Master 2025 tournament in Jakarta (Indonesia). This is a tournament that brings together many of the world's top tennis players and the number one Vietnamese tennis player has performed relatively successfully, reaching the quarterfinals.

In the first round, Thuy Linh surprisingly defeated the number one Indian player, number 5 in the world, Pusarla Venkata Sindhu with a score of 2-0. She then defeated the Malaysian badminton "prodigy" Karupathevan Letshanaa in the second round. However, in the quarter-finals, Thuy Linh lost 16-21, 20-22 to the Taiwanese (Chinese) player Sung Shuo Yun.

On the occasion of New Year's Day, tennis player Thuy Linh had an interesting conversation with Dan Tri reporter about her journey to conquer titles in 2024 as well as her goals for 2025.

2024 has seen Thuy Linh compete in many domestic and international tournaments and win many impressive titles, are you satisfied with what you have achieved in the past year?

- In fact, my performance last year was only stable, not as good as I expected. However, I am very happy that right before Tet, my ranking returned to the top 30 in the world. This is an encouraging result for me after my tireless efforts in training and competing.

So what memorable awards have you won in the past year?

- 2024 is the first year I reached the final of the German Open Super 300 tournament in Germany in March. It was a tournament in which I played well, especially when I defeated the number 2 Korean player, ranked 13th in the world, Kim Ga Eun with a score of 20-22, 21-8 and 21-16.

Unfortunately, in the final, I lost to the Danish player, Mia Blichfedt with the score of 11-21 and 9-21. After that, I also won a ticket to participate in the 2024 Paris Olympics, then successfully defended the Vietnam Open championship.

Competing in many tournaments domestically and internationally, which match left the most impression on you last year?

Perhaps the match with Kim Ga Eun in the semi-finals of the German Open last March brought me the most emotions. Because my opponent was a very strong Korean player, who won the women's team event at the 2022 Asian Games and the 2023 Korea Open.

The victory over Kim Ga Eun also helped me reach the finals of a tournament in the Badminton World Tour Super 300 system for the first time. Apart from that tournament, each tournament brings different emotions to me, and in any tournament, I always try my best to achieve the best results.

It seems that you are competing until the days leading up to Tet before you can rest. So how are you celebrating Tet this year and what are your plans during this time?

- I just returned home on the 27th of Tet, taking the opportunity to help my parents go shopping and decorate the house to create a Tet atmosphere. This Tet, I will stay home to celebrate Tet with my family, taking the opportunity to rest and practice at home.

For me, Tet is a very special occasion, when I have a full vacation with my family and have time to visit relatives and friends. It is a very rare time that I have when I often have to travel continuously and away from home all year round.

What is your favorite dish during Tet and do you know how to make it?

- I love many foods. I like banh chung and chicken. I'm just not very good at cooking (laughs).

What are your goals for 2025 and what international tournaments do you expect to attend?

- I will try to accumulate and maintain my achievements in 2025, especially strive to improve my ranking on the world rankings and have the best form before attending the 2025 SEA Games taking place in December in Thailand.
