Novak Djokovic was eliminated from the US Open semi-finals after a 0-3 defeat to Carlos Alcaraz (6-4, 7-6, 6-2). At the age of 38, the Serbian admitted that he was “physically exhausted” and could not maintain the pace in five-set confrontations.
The match started off with great enthusiasm as Djokovic continued to show his class in the 2 sets. However, Djokovic suddenly ran out of steam, made consecutive mistakes and lost the tie-break. He admitted: “I ran out of energy. At my age, that is inevitable.”
This defeat continues to show the clear gap between Djokovic and the world's two top young players. This is the third consecutive time he has fallen in a Grand Slam semi-final to Alcaraz or Jannik Sinner, all in three sets.
“They are so good, playing at a very high level. At this age, physical strength is not the same as before, that is inevitable. It is difficult to overcome the barrier named Sinner and Alcaraz at Grand Slam. I will continue to fight, but the road is getting more and more difficult” - Djokovic expressed.
“In the future, it will be very difficult for me to overcome Sinner, Alcaraz, in a five-set series at Grand Slams. I think I have a better chance of winning three sets, but in a five-set series it is very difficult.
If I have to lose, I accept losing to them. They deserve it" - Djokovic shared after the defeat, missing the chance to win his 25th Grand Slam title and affirmed that he will participate in the next Grand Slams.
However, Djokovic is still the oldest tennis player in history to reach the semi-finals of all four Grand Slams in the same season.
He is still better than names like Zverev or Fritz, but is clearly left behind compared to Alcaraz and Sinner.
