Accordingly, in the new film Bugonia , currently competing at the Venice Film Festival, Emma Stone plays the CEO of a large company who is kidnapped by a conspiracy theorist couple who believe she is an alien intent on destroying the Earth. The black comedy is directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, Stone's frequent collaborator.

Speaking at a press conference during the event, the actress said: "I don't know if I should look down on us humans, but one of my all-time favorite people is Carl Sagan and I completely agree with his philosophy. Accordingly, Sagan deeply believes that we are alone in this vast universe is quite narcissistic. So, yes, I will say it straight: I believe in aliens."

This is Lanthimos' third film in three years, all of which have starred Stone. The Greek director won the Golden Lion at Venice two years ago for his gothic comedy Poor Things , which went on to win four Oscars, including Best Actress for Stone.

Bugonia also stars Jesse Plemons (who starred in Lanthimos's Kinds of Kindness last year) as a conspiracy-minded beekeeper and Aidan Delbis as his accomplice. The script was written by Will Tracy, co-writer of The Menu and an English-language remake of Jang Joon-hwan's 2003 South Korean film Save the Green Planet!.

Stone said she enjoyed working with Lanthimos: "I loved the material he was going for, the world he wanted to explore, and the characters he generously allowed me to play." She also described Bugonia as a "truly engaging, moving, funny, quirky, and vibrant" project that "reflects this moment in our world."

Lanthimos said he was "immediately drawn" to the script: "I don't think it's necessarily a dystopian film because it's also about what's happening right now. Humanity is about to face judgment and we need to choose the right path in many ways, otherwise I don't know how much longer we have to survive with the invasion of technology, AI, war..."
