Recently, billionaire Erick Thohir was appointed as the Minister of Youth and Sports of Indonesia. This has made many Indonesian fans worried that he will be forced to resign as President of PSSI to avoid conflicts of interest.

However, after Mr. Erick Thohir explained, FIFA officially allowed this billionaire to hold two jobs at the same time. In the letter sent to PSSI, FIFA stated that Mr. Erick Thohir's holding of the two above positions at the same time does not create a conflict of interest according to the organization's charter.
Mr. Erick Thohir emphasized: “This morning I received a letter from FIFA. The content confirmed that with my experience and contributions in the field of football, there is no conflict of interest. Therefore, my position is completely transparent and clear. As Minister of Youth and Sports, of course I will always maintain that balance.”
Amid concerns that football could become a special favored sport due to his position as PSSI President, Erick Thohir insists this will not happen.
“I will not let football become the top priority of the Ministry of Youth and Sports. Instead, I will focus on developing 13-14 key sports and I will also restructure other sports,” he added.

Mr. Erick Thohir also expressed his gratitude to FIFA for their trust and thanked the President of Indonesia for their support. He shared: “I would like to thank FIFA for this trust. Since I took office as the Minister of Youth and Sports, the President has also expressed his trust in me.”
The fact that Mr. Erick Thohir continues to hold the position of President of PSSI is good news for Indonesian football. Under his tenure, Indonesian football has developed strongly thanks to the policy of naturalizing European players. The Indonesian team is about to enter the 4th qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup. They are the Southeast Asian team that has advanced the furthest in the World Cup qualifying round.
