Ford "champion" of car recalls in the US, equal to many other companies combined

In all of 2023, Ford launched 54 recalls, involving 5,692,135 vehicles in the US, but in just the first 6 months of this year, Ford and its subsidiary Lincoln have carried out 31 recalls, involving 3,660,752 cars, pickup trucks and SUVs.

Ford had the highest volume, with 1.9 million vehicles sold in 2023. Toyota was right behind, with 1.89 million vehicles, while Chevrolet and GMC together sold more than 2.2 million vehicles.

However, Ford recalled the most vehicles, more than GM, Honda, Toyota, Nissan, VW, and BMW combined.

Ford's 2024 recalls involve more than half a million F-150 pickup trucks for a software update to fix an automatic downshift issue, and an equal number of Bronco Sport and Maverick vehicles because the 12-volt battery pack could be overloaded due to an electrical system defect.

In the US, Tesla has the second-highest recall rate after Ford. The company has issued eight recalls, covering 2,552,178 vehicles, despite selling far fewer vehicles than Ford (1.8 million globally in 2023). Most recalled Teslas only require software updates to fix the problem.

Chrysler ranked third, with 28 recalls, but with a total of 2,247,965 vehicles. Kia, Honda (including Acura) and Toyota (including Lexus) all recalled more than 1 million vehicles in the US in the first 6 months of the year.

Meanwhile, GM recalled the fewest of the major automakers - 655,867 vehicles, ranking 8th.
