Lao Cai destroyed more than 9,600 pigs due to African swine fever outbreak
According to information from the Lao Cai agricultural sector, African swine fever continues to cause heavy losses, with more than 9,600 pigs being culled in August due to infection. Outbreaks mainly appear in small-scale farms where hygiene and disease prevention conditions are limited.
Authorities said that in August, the disease spread to nearly 1,500 households in 37 communes and wards in the province. In total, the number of pigs destroyed was equivalent to about 550 tons of meat, significantly affecting the local livestock industry.
To control the situation, specialized agencies are strengthening monitoring of the epidemic's developments, while promoting measures such as quarantine of animal transport, environmental disinfection and weather monitoring to limit the risk of spreading. Lao Cai province has also deployed emergency measures, including zoning the outbreak, controlling the source of infection and carrying out regular cleaning and disinfection to prevent widespread outbreaks.
For households that have not been affected, the agricultural sector recommends strictly applying preventive measures, including regular cleaning of barns, strict control of people and vehicles entering and leaving the livestock area, and close monitoring of pig health to promptly detect and handle any unusual signs.
