Pig price today January 3

* The live pig market in the North decreased slightly by 1,000 VND/kg in some places.

Specifically, the provinces and cities including Thai Nguyen, Phu Tho, Thai Binh , Vinh Phuc and Tuyen Quang all adjusted transactions down to the same level of 50,000 VND/kg.

Traders in the remaining provinces and cities maintained stable transactions compared to yesterday.

Pig price today in the North is around 50,000 - 51,000 VND/kg.

* Pig prices in the Central and Central Highlands regions increase and decrease inconsistently.

Accordingly, Quang Binh province slightly increased by 1,000 VND/kg to 50,000 VND/kg.

On the contrary, live pigs in Quang Nam , Binh Dinh and Binh Thuan are being purchased at a price of around 48,000 - 49,000 VND/kg after a decrease of 1,000 - 2,000 VND/kg, depending on the region.

Currently, the price of live pigs in the Central and Central Highlands regions is around 48,000 - 50,000 VND/kg.

* In the Southern region, pig prices increased and decreased in opposite directions.

Accordingly, the area of Binh Phuoc, Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Duong and Tay Ninh provinces increased slightly by 1,000 VND/kg to a common level of 50,000 VND/kg.

Meanwhile, Vinh Long, Kien Giang, Hau Giang, Ben Tre and Soc Trang provinces lowered the purchase price to 49,000 - 50,000 VND/kg (depending on the region), after all decreasing by 1,000 VND/kg.

Pig price in the Southern region today fluctuates between 49,000 - 52,000 VND/kg.

* 2023 is considered a difficult year for the livestock industry when consumption demand and pork prices are low, affecting the business results of both businesses and livestock households.

After rising to 60,000 - 65,000 VND/kg in mid-July 2023, the price of live pigs quickly turned around and has been continuously decreasing until now. Updated on January 1, 2024, the price of live pigs in the three regions is about 48,000 - 52,000 VND/kg, down 21 - 27% compared to early July 2023.

Mr. Tong Xuan Chinh, Deputy Director of the Department of Animal Husbandry (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) said that the production cost of large-scale enterprises fluctuates between 50,000 and 55,000 VND/kg. This means that at present, enterprises are operating below cost price. Both farmers and small enterprises are "out of breath" because they operate below cost price. Large enterprises also recorded a sharp decrease in profits.

On the business side, Mr. Nguyen Dang Phu, Deputy General Director of Vissan, commented that the biggest problem with the livestock industry at the moment is still weak demand, leading to a series of consequences and arising costs. On the other hand, when weak consumption of goods affects the revenue of the supermarket system, they will increase the discount percentage to compensate, this puts pressure on suppliers like Vissan.

“We have not found a clear driving force for the livestock industry, we only hope that consumption demand and purchasing power will improve during the Lunar New Year period,” said Mr. Tong Xuan Chinh.
