"Dream" of professor and doctor

In recent days, public opinion has been constantly discussing the Ministry of Education and Training requesting two universities to revoke the bachelor's and doctoral degrees granted to an abbot of a pagoda in Ba Ria - Vung Tau province, after determining that his high school degree was illegal.

From the above story, public opinion asks, where did this person get his high school diploma to be able to study for a university, master's, and doctorate?

And it's not until now that the question "what is the purpose of getting a PhD?" has been raised, along with what the PhD thesis will research.

Professors and doctors are people who are closely involved in scientific research, teaching, and laboratories. The purpose of research is to point out the current situation, limitations, and propose solutions to improve the community or society. But how many regional projects and inventions have been published so far, compared to the number of professors and doctors we have?

As early as 2014, statistics showed that Vietnam had 9,000 professors and more than 24,000 PhDs. At that time, this number was 5 times that of Japan and 10 times that of Israel. Since then, no detailed statistics have been found.

According to statistics from the Ministry of Education and Training, from 2015 to 2020, the country had more than 1,450 people recognized as professors. However, the number of professors participating in teaching at higher education institutions is less than half.

As of December 31, 2019, universities and academies had 78,250 lecturers, including 619 professors, 4,831 associate professors, and 17,035 PhDs. No one knows the number of professors and PhDs outside of schools and research institutes. Thus, it can be seen that the number of professors and PhDs not related to training and research is very large.

And if all the doctoral theses in the past 10 years were published, perhaps not only would the "badminton doctorate" cause a stir in public opinion like before, but there would certainly be many topics that would surprise everyone!

So what do professors and doctors do when they are not involved in teaching and scientific research? And what is their purpose in becoming professors and doctors?

In many countries around the world, the title of professor is associated with the work of a research institute or a school. And when they retire, that's it, they are no longer professors.

In Vietnam, when someone is awarded the title of professor, it is something that they will keep for life, while not teaching or doing research.

In the society’s mind, professors and doctors are talented people, the elite of the intellectual community. Perhaps that is why becoming a professor or doctor is the dream of many people. And to make that dream come true, besides those who are truly talented and educated, many try to achieve it at all costs.

Is that why there are research theses like "Research on the effectiveness of Hatha Yoga exercises on the health of elderly women...", "Research on physical development for 5-6 year old preschool children in the province...", "Research on building the content of recreational sports club activities for university students...".

As professors and doctors, many people do not go to class, do not go to the lab all day, but are introduced as professors and doctors everywhere. Is that reasonable?

But it also needs to be said that there are topics that are not worthy of a doctoral thesis, and the researchers are not qualified enough, but why do they still become doctors? Even without a valid high school diploma, they can still pass many rounds to take the doctoral exam, so whose responsibility is that?

In science, dishonesty is never allowed. Especially those who have achieved PhDs and professors cannot lie, because they are always a mirror for society as well as the scientific community to look up to.

On the other hand, I think a doctorate degree and the title of professor are only necessary for some fields, such as education, medicine...

But in general, management work does not necessarily require the participation of professors and doctors. Misconceptions about the use of professors and doctors may be the reason why many people try to achieve the "dream" of becoming a professor or doctor.
