Nearly 94,000 university lecturers, PhDs and professors increased sharply

By improving lecturer standards and enhancing research capacity, Vietnamese universities are gradually moving towards the goal of sustainable development and deep integration into the international higher education system.

Lecturers are PhDs, associate professors, and professors.

According to statistics on the higher education database system (HEMIS), up to now, the total number of lecturers in the system is 93,954 people, including lecturers with university, master's, doctoral degrees, associate professors and professors.

Statistics on the number of teaching staff up to the present time were announced by the Ministry of Education and Training on September 18.

The Ministry of Education and Training said that granting autonomy to public universities in recent times has created favorable conditions for schools to focus on improving the quality of their teaching staff.

Many schools have prioritized recruiting lecturers with doctoral degrees, and sending lecturers to study advanced, high-quality programs at prestigious universities around the world . This is an important step to improve teaching and research capacity, meeting the requirements of integration and educational innovation.

It is noted that the proportion of lecturers with doctoral degrees at universities is increasing. In addition, the State continues to support the improvement of the capacity of lecturers and managers through projects approved by the Prime Minister, in order to meet the requirements of fundamental and comprehensive innovation in education and training.

The proportion of lecturers with the titles of professor and associate professor also increases steadily every year (in 2024: 743 professors, 5,629 associate professors; in 2025: 785 professors, 5,908 associate professors).

This shows that schools have been aware of improving the quality of lecturers and standardizing the qualifications of the teaching staff according to the provisions of the Law on Education and the Law on Higher Education.

Continuing to evaluate the autonomy project of universities

Under the direction of the Central Steering Committee, the Ministry of Education and Training has managed two national universities (Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City) and received 18 units under the Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs. Of these, 16 are public service units, one single-member limited liability company for vocational education equipment and one public service unit under the General Department of Vocational Education.

On August 12, the Prime Minister issued Decision No. 1723, approving the list of 65 public service units under the Ministry of Education and Training. At the same time, the Ministry of Education and Training requested the Ministry of Home Affairs to transfer the service establishment to the ministry for management according to the organizational arrangement orientation.

The Ministry is also coordinating with relevant units to review the job position project, ensuring it is consistent with the new functions, tasks and powers after adjustment.

Along with that, the ministry approved the autonomy project on organization, finance and personnel for three large public service units: Hanoi University of Science and Technology, National Economics University and Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics.

The Ministry is currently continuing to appraise other autonomy projects of its affiliated public service units.
