Three scientists Susumu Kitagawa, Richard Robson and Omar M. Yaghi were honored at the 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences officially announced the winners of the 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry on October 8. The prize was awarded to three scientists: Susumu Kitagawa (Kyoto University/Japan), Richard Robson (University of Melbourne/Australia), and Omar M. Yaghi (University of California, Berkeley/USA). These three scholars were honored “for the development of metal-organic frameworks”.
Three scientists, Susumu Kitagawa (74 years old), Richard Robson (88 years old), and Omar M. Yaghi (60 years old), have created new molecular structures. These structures, also known as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), have large cavities, allowing molecules to freely enter and exit.
“Metal-organic frameworks have enormous potential, offering unprecedented opportunities to tailor materials with new functions,” said Heiner Linke, chair of the Nobel Committee for Chemistry, adding that the work has given chemistry “new opportunities to address some of the challenges facing the field.”
These new molecular structures have been widely applied in practice such as collecting water from the air in the desert, capturing carbon dioxide, storing toxic gases or catalyzing chemical reactions, removing pollutants in water...
