The Organizing Committee awarded 8 prizes (4 prizes in the category of Established Artists and 4 prizes in the category of Promising Artists). In which, painter and lecturer Ngo Thanh Hung ( Da Nang University of Architecture) won the Bronze prize in the category of Established Artists with the work "Memories of the Land".
The work “Memory of the Land” expresses the author’s contemplation of the relationship between humans and nature in the context of Vietnam - a country rich in cultural and historical memories but also suffering many wounds from war.
Inspired by the arid lands of the Central region, where collective memories of war are kept, the work impresses with a layer of natural mud clay covering the surface, which is broken to reveal the lacquer layer underneath, creating a sense of destruction and rebirth.
The UOB POY competition was first held in 1982 in Singapore with the aim of recognizing artists in the Southeast Asian region; providing opportunities for talented artists to showcase their works to the wider community.
In 2023, the competition will be expanded to Vietnam, bringing unique artistic experiences, making an impression from new and contemporary art practices that strongly spread, connecting the cultural traditions of each country and ethnic group, respectfully exploiting and cherishing the cultural heritage of each region.
Painter Ngo Thanh Hung graduated from Hue University of Arts and is currently a lecturer at Danang University of Architecture, a graduate student at Mahasarakham Academy of Fine Arts (Thailand).
After winning the Established Artist category, artist Ngo Thanh Hung will have more advantages when competing in the UOB POY Southeast Asia region; have many opportunities to participate in major domestic and international exhibitions, and win other awards for fine art creation in the future.
