Young people bring knowledge and passion to serve the community

Việt NamViệt Nam17/09/2024

In the context of modern society, young people increasingly assert their pioneering role in contributing to community development.

Young people full of enthusiasm and intelligence not only participate in beneficial activities, but also stand up to lead, organize and spread initiatives that bring sustainable values.

A typical example is the two sisters Tran Thi Tuong Anh and Tran Viet Bach, who have been tirelessly dedicated to promoting knowledge and lifelong learning through the Malaysian Wisdom House initiative, part of the global Wisdom House ecosystem.

The Compassionate Bookcase and the Wisdom House are two philanthropic programs in the field of education , focusing on creating, maintaining and developing completely free lifelong learning communities.

Up to now, the two programs have built a network of more than 25,000 bookcases (more than 1.5 million books) in more than 3,200 schools and residential communities; built 300 lifelong learning spaces in 17 provinces and cities of Vietnam and 5 other countries (Malaysia, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and the US).

In October 2023, the program was awarded the Literacy and Dissemination Award by the Library of Congress in the category of Outstanding Practice.

The journey of maturity and community service of talented young people

During the more than 8-year journey of the two programs, Humanitarian Bookcase and Wisdom House, Mr. Nguyen Anh Tuan, the founder of these two models, shared that spreading knowledge has always been the mission and guiding principle for all activities of the organization.

However, he emphasized that the big difference lies in the fact that the younger generation not only benefits but also leads, designs and implements the programs, thereby opening up a new model that is dynamic, creative and has sustainable values.

According to him, the efforts and contributions of Tuong Anh and Viet Bach over the years are a living proof of the potential power in using the intelligence and enthusiasm of young people to serve the community.

In June 2021, while studying in Malaysia, Tran Thi Tuong Anh (now a 2nd year student at Wesleyan University (USA) and Tran Viet Bach (now a 10th grade English major at Phan Boi Chau High School for the Gifted) co-founded the Malaysian Wisdom House with the goal of bringing knowledge to the Vietnamese community in Malaysia as well as in the country.

Under the leadership of these two young people, the Malaysian Wisdom House has grown into a strong initiative that goes beyond just teaching, to promoting cultural exchange and global knowledge sharing.

Community development through cross-border networking activities

The programs that Tuong Anh and Viet Bach implement do not only stop at providing English knowledge, but also aim to practice global skills, helping students step out into the world with confidence and a spirit of continuous learning.

In more than 15 free English courses that Tuong Anh and Viet Bach have organized, the teaching content ranges from grammar, communication, debate to mathematics in English, writing bilingual diaries. This helps thousands of students from Nghe An, Thanh Hoa, Ha Tinh and Quang Ngai provinces to access a modern and quality learning environment.

Not only stopping at online courses, every summer, Tuong Anh and Viet Bach return to Vietnam to organize direct exchanges, sharing experiences and skills with students in many localities. Starting from the first talk in August 2019, at Wisdom House No. 1, Thanh Tien commune (Thanh Chuong, Nghe An), with the theme "Small stories", the students gradually took the initiative to expand the sharing programs to many other villages and cities. Events were continuously held in Yen Thanh district, Thanh Chuong (Nghe An province); Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City in the summer of 2022 and in Thach Ha, Can Loc, Huong Son, Ha Tinh city (Ha Tinh province) in the summer of 2023.

Similarly, during the two months of July and August 2024, the two sisters continued to organize many learning exchange programs at secondary schools in Nghe An province. The event "Happy Road to School" at Nghi Trung Secondary School (Nghi Loc District) on August 4, "Toward the Horizon - Open Horizon" at Ton Quang Phiet Secondary School (Thanh Chuong District) on August 9, "Adventures near and far" on August 16 in Quan Hanh town (Nghi Loc District) attracted hundreds of teachers and students to attend.

In addition, the cultural exchange program with Associate Professor Shannon Gramse from the University of Alaska Anchorage (USA) at Thuy Nga Wisdom House (Tan Ky district) and the discussion "Embracing tomorrow - Welcoming the future" (Vinh city) with Mr. Ian Gardiner from New York Wisdom House were also continuously implemented from August 21-31.

In-depth lectures by professors from prestigious universities have helped the Malaysian Wisdom House become a bright spot in bringing knowledge to rural areas of Vietnam.

The two young people proactively expand cooperation with Wisdom Houses in other countries to build large-scale programs with long-term impacts. For example, they cooperate with New Zealand Wisdom House to train on financial management skills, with Australian Wisdom House to carry out meaningful volunteer programs, with Japanese Wisdom House to guide cultural adaptation and career guidance, etc.

The experience of living and studying in many countries helps Tuong Anh and Viet Bach have a comprehensive and in-depth view of the world, thereby conveying authentic and vivid stories to students. International experiences not only help them practice communication skills, but also provide new and creative perspectives on education, society and culture.

Tuong Anh and Viet Bach are constantly setting bigger goals for the future. Since 2023, Tuong Anh has become a lecturer at the National Education Equity Lab (New York, USA), where she has the opportunity to work with leading lecturers and connect knowledge with the global international student community.

As one of the faculty leaders from Wesleyan University, she hopes to work with her brother to continue expanding the influence of Wisdom House and create educational programs that have even greater impact.

Viet Bach, as co-founder, will continue to accompany her in educational activities. Both aim to not only improve the quality of education in Vietnam but also spread the spirit of lifelong learning globally.
