Permanent destination of international honors
A recently published research report by The Post Office (UK) shows that Hoi An leads the rankings of the most cost-effective long-haul destinations in the world .
According to The Post Office, airfare for long-distance travel can be quite expensive, but the cost of accommodation, food or sightseeing in Hoi An is quite affordable and worth considering.
The top 10 of this ranking are mostly famous destinations, including some destinations in Southeast Asia such as Bali (Indonesia), Penang (Malaysia) or Phuket (Thailand). This proves that Hoi An's appeal is not inferior to the top destinations in the region. Specifically, in 2024, Hoi An will welcome up to 4.5 million international visitors.
Notably, this is the second time in just 3 years (the previous time was in 2023) that Hoi An has topped this ranking. Continuing to be recommended in the Post Office's ranking report will certainly help Hoi An attract a large number of international visitors.
Fear from honor
Unlike other honors, being named many times in the Post Office's list of most cost-effective destinations raises certain concerns for Hoi An. With a relatively narrow space, while the heritage system and natural resources are vulnerable to risks, welcoming 4-5 million international visitors each year is a huge number for Hoi An's capacity.
Concerned about becoming a "cheap destination" as well as local overloading of destinations, in recent years, local authorities have made many moves to disperse visitors to the suburbs, tighten entrance tickets to the old town... Mr. Pham Phu Ngoc, Deputy Director of the Hoi An Cultural Heritage Conservation Center, informed that the entrance ticket price to Hoi An Ancient Town is among the cheapest in the world heritage system of Vietnam while there is a lot of loss because it is a "living heritage" area, and controlling tickets is very difficult.
Among the 6 key areas associated with the 6 growth drivers of Da Nang city, it is determined to develop tourism and high-quality services, associated with preserving and promoting traditional revolutionary values and cultural heritage, becoming an attractive destination in the world.
According to Mr. Nguyen Son Thuy, Director of Duy Nhat Dong Duong Tourism Company Limited, with the continuous honors, the story of international visitors to Hoi An is increasingly obvious and we need to accept this and not just select high-class visitors.
“It is important that stakeholders need to implement synchronous solutions to maximize benefits while minimizing impacts on heritage. With a spatial scope like Hoi An ancient town, applying modern digital technology will solve the problem of lost ticket revenue as well as divert visitors to reduce overload. The problem is whether we are bold enough to do it thoroughly or not,” said Mr. Thuy.
