Hai Phong: Successfully performed 4 corneal transplants

At exactly 8am on August 23, the first corneal transplant surgery was performed. After nearly 4 hours of surgery, the 4 corneal transplants were initially assessed by experts as successful.

News from Hai Phong Eye Hospital, on August 23, the hospital successfully performed 4 corneal transplants for 4 patients who lost vision due to corneal disease.

All four corneal transplant patients were from Hai Phong. The youngest patient was 16 years old, the oldest was 65 years old.

The patients were examined, consulted, performed screening tests and prepared with full legal documents and medical records as prescribed.

At exactly 8:00 a.m. on August 23, the first corneal transplant surgery for patient NKC, born in 2009, was performed.

After nearly 4 hours of surgery, the 4 corneal transplants were initially assessed by experts as successful. The patients were safely released from anesthesia and transferred to the post-operative room for monitoring and special care, strictly following infection control, resuscitation and post-transplant treatment procedures.

The surgeries were performed by leading ophthalmologists from the Central Eye Hospital, Hai Phong Eye Hospital, and the anesthesia team from Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital, along with a team of supporting experts.

The Chief of the surgical team is Associate Professor, Doctor Le Xuan Cung, Head of Cornea Department, Central Eye Hospital.

According to the hospital leader, regarding the cornea source, Hai Phong Eye Hospital received it from the National Coordination Center for Human Organ Transplantation and the Central Eye Bank. The good quality of donor corneas facilitated the professional aspects of the transplant. The hospital would like to thank the cornea donors and their families for helping to bring light to patients in Hai Phong.

Previously, in August 2023, Hai Phong Eye Hospital successfully performed corneal transplants for the first time on two patients.

In July 2024, the hospital continued to successfully perform corneal transplants for patients born in 1995 and 1998. Thus, to date, Hai Phong Eye Hospital has performed 8 corneal transplant surgeries.

The success of 8 corneal transplants in the past 3 years affirms the capacity, level and courage of the medical team of Hai Phong Eye Hospital in performing and mastering difficult techniques to help patients enjoy modern and specialized medical services and techniques.
