According to a VNA reporter in Seoul, on September 18, Lotte Card Company confirmed that information of nearly 3 million customers was leaked in a cyber attack on August 14.

Thus, contrary to initial announcements, nearly 1/3 of Lotte Card customers had their personal information violated.

At a press conference in Seoul, Lotte Card CEO Cho Jwa-jin confirmed that the personal information of 2.97 million members was compromised and publicly apologized to customers for causing great concern.

The leaked data related to online payment systems includes sensitive information such as card numbers, expiration dates and CVC codes that can be exploited for fraud.

The incident is expected to affect approximately 280,000 customers.

Lotte Card said these customers will be given priority to be reissued new cards. For the remaining 2.69 million customers, only a portion of the information was exposed and the company said it could not have used this information alone to conduct fraudulent transactions.

Lotte Card Company has decided to provide a 10-month interest-free installment payment service until the end of the year, regardless of the payment amount, to all customers whose customer information was leaked.

Lotte Card, South Korea's fifth-largest card issuer with about 9.6 million users, has pledged to fully compensate the victims. Accordingly, Lotte Card will take full responsibility and compensate for all damages, including secondary losses if confirmed to be related to this data leak.

Lotte Card had previously reported to the authorities on September 1 that 1.7 gigabytes (GB) of data had been stolen. However, a subsequent investigation revealed that the scale of the incident was much larger.

Lotte Card also admitted that although the attack occurred on August 14, the company only began an official investigation at the end of August.

On-site inspections by the Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) and the Financial Security Institute began on September 2 and found evidence of a leak of about 200 GB of data./.
