For many users, the most important reason to choose the iPhone Pro Max version is the screen size. However, the iPhone 17 Pro Max launched this year is expected to be the last “Pro Max” model to truly hold the title of the largest screen in Apple’s product line.
Specifically, Apple's concept of "Max" will change when the foldable iPhone appears. In the common understanding, the word "max" implies a limit that cannot be exceeded. However, Apple has changed its definition since the M1 Ultra chip was launched and surpassed the performance of the M1 "Max" chip.
Likewise, current signs point to a change coming to the iPhone lineup next year. The iPhone 18 Pro Max will no longer be the device with the largest screen. The main reason is the appearance of the iPhone Fold (folding screen iPhone).
Experts even say Apple may call this product the iPhone "Ultra", like on the M1 chip.
Leaked sources say Apple's first foldable iPhone will have a 5.5-inch external screen, a size considered quite modest compared to the standards of current iPhone models.

However, when the inner screen is opened, the 7.8-inch size of this device will easily surpass all other versions to officially hold the title of largest iPhone screen.
Assuming the current generation's dimensions remain the same, the 2026 lineup will have the following screen configurations: the iPhone 18 Pro Max will have a 6.9-inch display, while the iPhone Fold will have an internal display of up to 7.8 inches.
This marks the first time in history that an iPhone model will have a larger screen than the Pro Max version, which is considered the most advanced.
This change could pose a challenge to the traditional Pro Max user base. If their top priority is to have the largest screen size, will they need to switch to the iPhone Fold?
For the professional user group and those who always want to experience cutting-edge technology, the answer will most likely be yes.
However, analysts believe that most other consumers will still maintain the familiar and proven Pro Max size option, at least in the first year of the iPhone Fold's introduction to the market.
The iPhone Fold represents a completely new form factor, expected to deliver a 2-in-1 device experience, combining an iPhone and an iPad mini.
Not all users are willing to take the risk of a new, largely untested product, and the device’s rumored price tag of over $2,000 is also a significant barrier.
