Hezbollah confirms loss of supply route through Syria

Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem said on December 14 that the group had lost its military supply route through Syria.

In his first comments since the fall of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime, the Hezbollah leader confirmed that the armed group had lost its military supply route for the time being.

“However, this loss is only a small part of the group’s activities. The new government in Syria can help restore the above route, or we will find another way,” Reuters on December 14 quoted Mr. Qassem as saying.

Hezbollah began its intervention in Syria in 2013 to help Mr. al-Assad fight opposition groups. Mr. Qassem stressed that it was impossible to assess the strength of the new Syrian government “until it stabilizes and has a clear stance.” He hoped that the Lebanese and Syrian people and governments could continue to cooperate.

Developments in Syria could have some impact on the confrontation between Hezbollah and Israel, as the two sides have been fighting for more than a year and just reached a ceasefire at the end of November, although both sides have continuously blamed each other for violations.

In another development, Axios on December 14 quoted three Israeli officials as saying that Israel and Jordan held secret talks on December 13 to coordinate on the situation in Syria. The officials said the two countries wanted to work together on common security concerns, as both countries border Syria.

Jordan has repeatedly condemned Israel's attacks on Gaza and Lebanon, but the Amman government has also actively promoted solutions to de-escalate the conflict in recent months. In addition, Jordan is currently an important intermediary between Israel and opposition groups in Syria, according to Axios .
