The ZSU23-4 self-propelled anti-aircraft artillery system, improved by Vietnam in 2019, demonstrates the strategic vision of the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army in combating electronic warfare and effectively destroying UAVs and close-range targets.

The improved ZSU23-4 self-propelled anti-aircraft artillery system is placed at the Ministry of National Defense 's outdoor display area at the National Achievements Exhibition (Dong Anh commune, Hanoi).

Sharing with Thanh Nien , a tour guide at the exhibition area said that the ZSU23-4 self-propelled anti-aircraft artillery system was produced by the Soviet Union in the 60s of the last century, and is equipped in the military forces of many countries around the world , including Vietnam.

With the advantages of strong, concentrated firepower, high mobility, and being a reliable air defense shield for ground troops, this complex is still being used by many countries.

Currently, the ZSU23-4 self-propelled anti-aircraft artillery system is being researched and improved by the Institute of Military Science and Technology, General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army from a fire control system using optoelectronic equipment.

Optoelectronic equipment system improved by Vietnam

The fire control system uses optoelectronic equipment researched and improved by Vietnam, including components: optoelectronic observation station, central computer block, observation station and turret control and stabilization block, vehicle crew interface system manufactured with modern electronic technology, digital for equivalent technical combat indicators, some indicators are higher than the original ZSU23-4 complex, the vehicle's combat modes remain similar to the original radar equipment.

After improvement, the technical and tactical parameters of the ZSU23-4 self-propelled anti-aircraft gun are as follows: target detection distance during the day and at night (in unobstructed conditions, good weather) is 20 km for civil aircraft, 15 km for military aircraft; automatic target tracking distance during the day and at night is 18 km for civil aircraft, 12 km for military aircraft.

ZSU23-4 carries a crew of 4, can fire standing still; fire briefly; fire while moving at a speed of 15 km/h on dirt roads, 20 km/h on asphalt roads and on tank tracks.

The gun has 4 barrels, the range to destroy air targets is from 200 - 2,500 m; the target altitude is about 50 - 1,500 m; the speed of the air target is less than or equal to 450 m/s; the maximum range to destroy ground and water targets is 2,000 m.

This complex can move 50 km/h on asphalt roads, 30 km/h on dirt roads. Time to transition from marching to combat is 5 minutes when using daylight cameras, 8 minutes when using thermal imaging cameras.

ZSU23-4 with fire control system using optoelectronic equipment can be put into training and ready for combat in units of the Air Defense - Air Force. The improved complex has a Vietnamese interface, the buttons are simpler than the original ZSU23-4 complex, so training the combat crew to grasp the operation very quickly.

Notably, the ZSU23-4 complex is also equipped with 4 more missiles to enhance the ability to destroy targets, the missile range is about 5.5 km. The use of optoelectronic equipment will also help the vehicle resist electronic warfare, resist enemy interference and effectively destroy UAVs and close-range targets.
