Over 100,000 VND for a mini Tet apricot pot

Each mini apricot pot about 40-60 cm high is sold by gardeners for 100,000 VND, the lowest price in 5 years.

Mr. Vu, a gardener in Ben Tre , said that this year his ornamental plant nursery has introduced to the market apricot trees 40-50 cm high, priced at 99,000 VND. This price is 20% lower than last year and the cheapest in the past 5 years.

"Last year, 50cm tall apricot trees cost 120,000-130,000 VND," said Mr. Vu.

Nearly 1,000 small-sized apricot pots, priced at VND100,000 each, were also sold by Mr. Tuan in Cu Chi (HCMC) to wholesalers for shipment to the North. He estimated that sales this year could be half of last year’s.

Meanwhile, Mr. Nghia in Cai Mon (Ben Tre) has just started the Tet season and has decided to reduce the price by 20-30% to "push" 500 mini mai pots to wholesalers. "Mai trees have many canopies, flowers and enough buds but still have to reduce the price to make it easier to sell because of weak purchasing power," he said.

In fact, Mr. Vu said that this year, consumers' shopping needs have changed a lot, they are more economical when choosing to buy cheap ornamental plants for Tet, instead of several million dong like before. Therefore, growers have switched to growing small trees more than every year. Mini apricot trees have beautiful shapes, suitable for the altar of ancestors and the land god, so they are quite popular.

To stimulate demand, many gardeners have reduced their prices despite the high cost of care. They have also promoted online sales or live streaming in the garden. Mr. Nghia said that thanks to online sales, orders have increased by 10% in the past week.

According to gardeners, miniature apricot trees are grown and potted in about 2 years. Growers take care of and shape the apricot tree in the second year, usually in the 10th and 11th lunar months, so that it will have buds and flowers blooming in time for Tet.

For apricot varieties over 1 meter tall, gardeners said that this year, most of them are for rent, while the number of customers ordering to buy has decreased by 70%. As for large apricot pots, 4-50 million VND per tree, gardeners in Ho Chi Minh City, Cu Chi, and Long An said that customers have booked half of them, with stable prices. The rest will be displayed at Spring fairs near Tet.

In addition to small-sized apricot trees, mini peach branches are also popular with customers during Tet, priced at 80,000-150,000 VND. Peach "chip" bundles are made from 10 small branches, priced at 100,000-110,000 VND, down 10% compared to last year.

The Tet flower market this year is less vibrant than previous years. Supply output in Ho Chi Minh City, Ben Tre, Tien Giang , and Da Lat decreased by 5-30% compared to last year. Flower growers expect the selling price for the 2024 Lunar New Year to remain at the same level as last year.
