Ho Chi Minh City: More than 30% of children aged 1-5 who have not received all doses of measles vaccine have been vaccinated.

19,821 children aged 1-5 years old have been vaccinated against measles, accounting for 32.6% of the total 60,733 children required to be vaccinated according to the plan to proactively respond to measles epidemics in Ho Chi Minh City.

Recently, the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City issued Plan No. 4959/KH-UBND on Proactively responding to measles epidemics in Ho Chi Minh City.

The first phase focuses on vaccinating all children living in districts with high measles cases (Binh Chanh, Hoc Mon, Binh Tan, Thu Duc City...) with an estimated number of 263,640 children.

The Department of Health chaired a meeting on vaccination progress.

According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health, since the measles outbreak was announced with an average of 20 new cases per day, most of whom had not received enough doses of measles vaccine, the plan to vaccinate all children, regardless of their previous vaccination history, has been adjusted by the Ho Chi Minh City Disease Prevention Steering Committee to vaccinate children who have not received enough doses of measles vaccine.

Therefore, the People's Committees of districts, towns, Thu Duc City and related departments and agencies are closely coordinating and speeding up the progress of reviewing the reality, making a list of children aged 1-10 who have not received enough vaccinations (regardless of permanent and temporary residence) and mobilizing children to get vaccinated.

In addition, the Department of Health coordinated with the Department of Education and Training to urgently deploy a measles vaccination campaign for all children who have not been fully vaccinated in the shortest time to soon re-establish immunity in the community, contributing to ending the measles epidemic.

Based on data on children managed on the National Immunization Information System, it is estimated that the number of children aged 1-5 who have not received enough measles vaccine doses in Ho Chi Minh City is 60,733. For children aged 6-10, according to information from the Department of Education and Training, the number of children attending school from grades 1-5 is 633,036 (data for the 2023-2024 school year).

If the estimated number of children who have not been fully vaccinated accounts for 10% of the total number of children, the number of children aged 6-10 who need to be vaccinated in the campaign is expected to be about 63,303. Thus, the number of children aged 1-10 who need to be vaccinated against measles in the campaign is estimated at nearly 125,000 (including 60,733 children aged 1-5 and 63,303 children aged 6-10).

As of September 9, Ho Chi Minh City had 19,821 children aged 1-5 vaccinated against measles, accounting for 32.6% of the group aged 1-5, and 15% of the group aged 1-10.

In a quick assessment of the measles prevention work, the Department of Health noted that Binh Chanh district has achieved a vaccination rate of over 80% for children aged 1-5. In addition, the Department of Health highly appreciated the efforts of Phu Nhuan, 5, 3, 7, 10, Nha Be, Binh Tan, and District 6 districts in reviewing the list of children aged 1-5 living in the area. These are districts with a higher number of actual surveys than the number of children managed on the National Immunization Information System.

In addition, there are still districts that need to step up and speed up the actual review work for the vaccination campaign to be truly effective. Specifically, District 1, Tan Binh, Tan Phu and District 12 are districts that have only reached about 70%. Regarding vaccination progress, the Department of Health has 21 districts, except Binh Chanh district, all of which have vaccination progress below 60% compared to the number of children listed.
