Al Masirah TV on January 29 quoted spokesman Yahya Saria of the Houthi forces in Yemen confirming that the force had launched a missile attack on the US Navy's mobile expeditionary base USS Lewis B. Puller in the Gulf of Aden.

"On January 28, the Yemeni Navy launched an anti-ship missile at the USS Lewis B. Puller while it was in the Gulf of Aden," Mr. Saria said.

Accordingly, Houthi identified the ship as providing logistical support to US forces participating in attacks on Houthi targets in Yemen. Mr. Saria also said the attack on the US ship "is part of military measures to defend Yemen and support the oppressed Palestinian people".

ABC quoted an anonymous US defense official as saying there was no attack on the USS Lewis B. Puller. However, Houthis had previously launched missiles that did not hit their intended targets and fell to the ground or into the sea.

Following the escalation of the Hamas-Israel conflict in the Gaza Strip, the Houthi forces warned that they would launch attacks on Israeli territory and would not allow Israeli-related ships to pass through the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait until Israel ceases its military operations in Gaza.

Since mid-November 2023, this force has attacked dozens of commercial ships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.

On January 28, the US warship HMS Diamond responded to a Houthi drone attack in the Red Sea.

"Deploying its Sea Viper missile system, Diamond destroyed an incoming drone without causing any injury or damage to Diamond or the crew," according to a statement from the UK Ministry of Defence .

“These illegal and intolerable attacks are completely unacceptable and it is our duty to protect freedom of navigation in the Red Sea,” the statement said.
