Mobilizing 1,400 workers to construct Terminal T3 at Tan Son Nhat Airport

Ho Chi Minh City: About 1,400 workers and engineers along with nearly 400 vehicles and equipment were mobilized to construct T3 station to speed up progress and complete the project next year.

The information was announced by Mr. Le Khac Hong, Head of the Tan Son Nhat Airport T3 Terminal Construction Project Management Board, on the morning of January 19, when mentioning the progress of the project after more than a year of construction. This is the largest domestic passenger terminal in the country, with a capacity of 20 million passengers per year, with an investment of nearly 11,000 billion VND from the capital of the Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV).

According to Mr. Hong, after starting construction at the end of 2022, the project has now completed all demolition, ground, pile foundation, and basement floor. At the construction site, the contractor is simultaneously implementing the main items such as the passenger terminal, parking garage, non-aviation service center... These items are currently about 50% complete, of which the passenger terminal is expected to complete the structure in May this year, and the parking garage will be completed three months later.

"To ensure the plan, the project's 5 contractors are currently mobilizing about 1,400 workers and engineers, 16 tower cranes and 350 vehicles and equipment at the construction site," Mr. Hong said, adding that the construction process is organized and strictly controlled in terms of progress according to a 15-day cycle. For delayed parts of the work, the contractor must have a solution to compensate for the progress to stick to the general plan.

The investor representative also said that due to the narrow space, it was difficult to organize the construction, install cranes, service roads, material yards, worker camps, etc. Contractors had to take turns and flexibly adjust the location depending on the progress of the project.

In addition, the station project is also implementing the Tran Quoc Hoan - Cong Hoa connecting road project outside, so the two investors must regularly coordinate and plan synchronously in the process of transporting materials, waste, and equipment. "However, the construction progress up to this point is well controlled, ensuring the plan to complete the entire project by mid-2025," said Mr. Hong.

The T3 terminal project was approved by the Government in 2020, aiming to increase the capacity of Tan Son Nhat airport to 50 million passengers per year, along with the two existing terminals T1 and T2. Terminal T3 consists of three main items: a passenger terminal, a multi-storey car park combined with non-aviation services and an overpass system. The terminal has one basement and four floors, built on an area of 112,500 m2.

The architecture of Terminal T3 is inspired by the traditional Ao Dai - one of the cultural symbols of Vietnam. The terminal is designed into two separate departure and arrival sections, with 90 check-in counters, 20 automatic bagdrop counters, 42 check-in kiosks, 27 boarding gates, 6 departure baggage handling islands and 10 arrival baggage return islands... The parking lot and non-aviation service complex includes two basements and four upper floors built on a total area of 130,000 m2.

To connect this station, the Tran Quoc Hoan - Cong Hoa connecting road project, more than 4 km long, is being implemented by Ho Chi Minh City outside with a total investment of more than 4,800 billion VND. This project is expected to be completed by the end of 2024. In addition to connecting T3 station, it will break the monopoly of Truong Son road to and from the airport, helping to reduce congestion in the area.
