From December 2025: Domestic flights will only have check-in counters for passengers with checked baggage.

Starting in December 2025, domestic air passengers will no longer have to jostle at check-in counters. According to the latest instructions from the Prime Minister, only passengers with checked baggage and special passengers need to check in at the counter.

Most other passengers will carry out the entire flight process using biometric technology integrated on the VNeID application or via self-service kiosks at the airport.

Big difference in flight check-in journey

Previously, passengers were required to bring identification documents (ID, passport, etc.) to check-in, then go to the security gate, boarding gate. Each step required presenting documents and boarding pass, which took a lot of time, especially during rush hour.

From December 2025, the process will change fundamentally. For passengers without checked baggage, with just a phone installed with the VNeID application, passengers can check in online, go through security and board the plane thanks to facial recognition technology. Identification documents are no longer required.

Passengers with checked baggage or special passengers (elderly, children traveling alone, people needing assistance) must still go to the counter to check in their baggage or receive direct assistance.

Thus, instead of all passengers crowding at the check-in counter, the system will "free" a large number of passengers from the waiting line, reducing pressure on both the airport and the airline.

Less queuing, faster

Many customers are starting to get used to automatic check-in via VNeID, creating a seamless travel experience, especially in areas such as security screening and boarding, which are often crowded.

At Terminal T3 of Tan Son Nhat Airport, Ms. Nguyen Hoang Anh (28 years old, Binh Thanh ward) said it was her first time checking in using the VNeID application.

"I just open the app, choose the airline service, the system automatically connects to the airline. At the security gate, the facial recognition scanner is done in a few seconds. No need for documents, no need to worry about forgetting or losing the boarding pass anymore" - Ms. Hoang Anh shared.

Similarly, Mr. Nguyen Minh Quan (35 years old, IT employee) regularly flies from Ho Chi Minh City to Da Nang .

"In the past, going through security screening was really a nightmare. There were many times when it was too crowded, jostling, and some flights required waiting in line for nearly half an hour to complete the procedures. Now, the experience of checking in for a flight through VNeID only takes a few minutes. I find this convenient, as long as the data security is good, everyone will want to use it" - Mr. Quan said.

According to airlines Vietnam Airlines , Vietjet, Bamboo Airways, the new process brings many benefits such as passengers checking in faster, no longer worrying about forgetting documents and more safety thanks to biometric data being compared to prevent fraud.

However, in reality, not everyone is familiar with using VNeID when flying. Passengers should still bring their citizen identification card or valid identification documents to complete procedures if necessary.

In many cases, customers are subjective, opening the application at the airport, confused because they forgot the password or the phone cannot access VNeID, especially if it is close to the departure time, it can lead to flight delays.

Promoting automatic procedures, ACV increases investment in equipment

According to the Prime Minister 's directive, from now until October 2025, the entire VNeID electronic identification and authentication system will be integrated with biometric technology (face, fingerprint) to serve traffic procedures, including aviation.

The Ministry of Public Security is in charge of coordinating with ministries, branches and localities to deploy, ensure data security and prevent fraud. The Ministry of Finance is assigned to urge units to coordinate to connect VNeID to the traffic service system before September 15.

Vietnam Airports Corporation - ACV must complete investment in infrastructure and equipment for deployment before October 30.

From September 15, Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet and other airlines began instructing passengers to use VNeID to collect biometrics at the counter or on the application, to go through security gates and automatic boarding gates.

Aviation experts say the application of biometric synchronization on VNeID is a big step forward in digital transformation of the aviation industry.

If successfully implemented, the process would change the travel habits of tens of millions of passengers each year and could be extended to railways, metros and other public services.
