Iran announces investigation results into Hamas leader case, arrests more than 20 people, mentions strong response 'at the right time'

Iran confirmed that Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was assassinated by a short-range warhead containing 7 kg of explosives.

On August 3, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced the results of an investigation stating that Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh was killed by a short-range warhead containing about 7 kg of explosives, launched from outside the guest house where he resided in Tehran.

The statement also again mentioned Tehran's strong response "at an appropriate time".

Meanwhile, the New York Times (USA) reported on the same day that Iran had arrested more than 20 people in the investigation of the attack. Among those arrested were senior intelligence officers, military officers and staff at the guesthouse managed by the IRGC in the capital Tehran, where the attack took place.

Also on August 3, the Hamas movement said it had initiated a broad consultation process within its leadership and organizations to select a new leader to replace leader Ismail Haniyeh, who was recently assassinated in Iran.

According to Hamas, although a number of its leaders have been assassinated over the decades, Hamas has quickly chosen alternatives according to the organization's regulations.

Hamas' executive groups and the main Shura consultative body are continuing their work and will announce the results of the consultations, once the process is complete.

Leader Haniyeh was killed in the capital Tehran on the morning of July 31 after attending the inauguration of new Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.
