Unlike women's volleyball, Asian teams are not so strong in men's volleyball. At the 2025 World Championship, only Japan is in the top seed group.
But then Japan caused a big disappointment when they were eliminated in the group stage, followed by China, South Korea, Qatar and the Philippines.
In contrast, Iran showed impressive form when they passed the group stage, then came back to beat Serbia 3-2 dramatically in the round of 16.
However, Iran's adventure ended when they faced the Czechs. In the world rankings, the Czechs were two places below Iran. But when they actually met, they showed the superiority of a European team.
Iran only surprised the Czech Republic in the first game when they won 25-22. In the second game, the Czech Republic won dramatically 27-25.
In the next two games, Czech always led Iran by a safe 2-3 points from the beginning of each game, then they convincingly won 25-20, 25-21 in the third and fourth games, thereby closing the 3-1 victory.
The next match between the US and Bulgaria was much more dramatic. The US won convincingly 25-21, 25-19 to lead 2-0 after the first two sets.
But then in the third game, Bulgaria completely transformed to win 25-17, before winning 25-22 in the fourth game.
The final game between the two teams was full of drama. Bulgaria was at one point leading 14-10 with 4 points to go. The US fought back to make it 13-14, including a handball error that made their opponents miss their celebration.
But in the end, Bulgaria still won 15-13 in the final game, ending the emotional comeback.
Thus, the quarter-finals of the 2025 Men's Volleyball World Championship have officially ended, thereby determining the two "purely European" semi-final matches: Italy - Poland and Czech - Bulgaria. The semi-finals will take place on September 27.
