Iran unveils new missile system as 'rival' to Russia's S-300

The new surface-to-air missile system, called Bavar-373, was unveiled at an event marking Iran's Defense Industry Day attended by President Hassan Rouhani and Defense Minister Amir Hatami, according to Press TV.

According to Press TV, Bavar-373 is an air defense missile system designed to intercept and destroy enemy targets flying at an altitude of 65 km. The system uses missiles with a maximum range of 300 km, and is capable of detecting 100 targets at the same time and shooting down 6 targets.

Bavar-373 is a rival to the Russian-made S-300 missile system and has a number of significant improvements, Press TV reports.

In recent times, Iran has developed many domestic weapons while the country cannot import weapons due to international sanctions.

Western military analysts say Iran often exaggerates its weapons capabilities, although concerns about Tehran's long-range ballistic missile program helped prompt the United States last year to withdraw from the nuclear accord Iran signed with six countries in 2015.
