Clip: More than 1.4 km of coastline in Xuan Hoi commune, Nghi Xuan district (Ha Tinh province) has seriously eroded, eating deep into the dike, threatening the lives of hundreds of households.
The sea dike of Xuan Hoi commune, Nghi Xuan district (Ha Tinh province) is about 2 km long, a protective shield for about 450 households in Tan Ninh Chau and Hoi Tien villages. This is a "hot spot" of landslides every rainy and stormy season, with an average annual erosion of the coastline of about 5-10 m.
To deal with coastal erosion and protect the dike, Nghi Xuan District People's Committee has built a coastal erosion prevention project over 1.4 km long, with a total construction cost of nearly 15 billion VND.
Due to the impact of storm No. 4, causing heavy rain and big waves, a coastline of more than 1.4 km long through Tan Ninh Chau and Hoi Tien villages (Xuan Hoi commune) suffered serious erosion, many households inside the dike lived in fear and anxiety.
The sea dike section through Tan Ninh Chau village is only more than 10m from the landslide site, and the subsidence still shows signs of eating deep into the mainland.
Serious erosion at the coast of Xuan Hoi commune, Nghi Xuan makes people live in insecurity.
Mr. Phan Vinh Tuy, residing in Tan Ninh Chau village, Chau Hoi commune, said: "It was only affected by storm No. 4, with winds of level 6 and level 7, but the landslide was already this big. If the storm really hits, the landslide will be deeper inland. People are very worried and cannot feel secure to build houses or do business."
According to local residents, the landslide situation is getting more and more serious. Ms. Vo Thi Loan, residing in Xuan Hoi commune, worried: “My house is only 30m from the sea dike. Every time we hear the sound of big waves crashing on the shore, my family can’t eat or sleep. As the rainy and stormy season approaches, we are always in fear. We hope that the authorities will quickly come up with a plan to help people.”
Mr. Phan Van Chau, residing in Tan Ninh Chau village, said: "At the beginning of the rainy season this year, the coastline eroded about 30 meters deep, and after storm No. 4, it became even more serious. The local government has built a breakwater, but the erosion is getting more and more serious. During the rainy and stormy days, we cannot sleep well because we are afraid that the waves will break the dike."
Although there was a breakwater to prevent erosion, the waves still beat against the shore, causing the shore to be distorted. The breakwater that the unit had just constructed collapsed and crashed into the sea.
Every day local people go to the beach to watch the erosion.
Talking to PV Dan Viet, Mr. Nguyen Tien Thanh - Vice Chairman of Xuan Hoi Commune People's Committee, said: "Due to the impact of storm No. 4, the coastline has experienced serious erosion. Currently, the breakwater of more than 1km has been completed, but the local government and people are still worried because landslides and erosion still occur frequently. Currently, the local government is proposing to superiors solutions to prevent landslides, especially during this rainy and flood season."
