Expert's opinion on 2 suspected tiger footprints in Son La

According to the initial assessment of experts from the Department of Forestry Animals, Faculty of Forest Resources and Environmental Management, University of Forestry (Prof. Dr. Vu Tien Thinh; Dr. Nguyen Dac Manh; Master Do Quang Huy), the discovered footprints have 4 toes touching the ground, with claw marks in front of the toes, suspected to be of a canine.

The tiger footprints do not have claw marks because when moving, the tiger retracts its claws into the pad, and only releases its claws when it pounces on prey. The middle pad mark on a dog footprint is quite round. Meanwhile, the middle pad mark on a tiger footprint looks trapezoidal and is not similar to the footprint photographed in Chieng Hac commune, Moc Chau district.

Dog footprints are usually diamond-shaped, while tiger footprints are usually circular. In addition, the width of the footprints measured is only about 6 cm, while the width of the footprints of adult tigers is larger.

With the above comparison results, it is highly likely that the animals recorded in Chieng Hac commune, Moc Chau district are not tigers.

Local authorities also confirmed that no one saw the Tiger, but only discovered footprints and reported them.

However, local authorities and functional forces still advise people to limit movement through this area, at the same time, be vigilant and have the best self-protection plan; if any strange discovery is made, it is necessary to promptly report to local authorities.
