Hanoi People's Committee and Sun Group Corporation started construction of Hanoi Opera House project in Tay Ho ward on the morning of October 5.

This is also a rare large-scale cultural and artistic project built with 100% socialized capital from Sun Group. The entire design, construction and operation process is closely managed and supervised by Hanoi City.

Hanoi Opera House was designed by architect Renzo Piano, one of the most influential architects of the 20th century. As the first Italian to be included in the Top 100 most influential people in the world , Renzo Piano received many prestigious awards during his 60-year career, such as the Pritzker Prize, considered the Nobel Prize of architecture.

The Hanoi Opera House project is considered lucky for Vietnam, when the legendary Renzo Piano, with 88 years of age and 67 years of experience, chose to dedicate his life's accumulated quintessence to design.

Unable to attend the Groundbreaking ceremony, architect Renzo Piano sent a special message and feelings for the project he devoted so much of his heart to:

“Although I cannot be with you today, my heart is still here. I send all my best wishes and full joy on this special day. I love this project, and I believe it is my most beloved project. This project is associated with music, and music is my passion. The theater is a peninsula, a place that always carries magic.

Amidst the waves, this musical island will be more beautiful and full of magic. The most wonderful thing for me is to create a project where everyone can come together, listen to music, enjoy and share happiness.

With a floor area of approximately 40,980 m² (excluding parking and technical areas), nearly 6 times the area of an 11-a-side football field, the Theatre has two large auditoriums including the main auditorium.

Specifically, the opera hall (capacity of 1,797 seats) and the multi-purpose auditorium with a mobile seating system that can be moved to create space for standing events such as live music performances, concerts... with a capacity of 1,430 standing seats and 216 balcony seats.

In addition to the two auditoriums, the Theatre also has many other multi-purpose spaces such as the Main Hall, Rehearsal and Practice Rooms, Museum, and Observation Deck.

The project is not only a place to serve many different types of art performances such as symphony concerts, Broadway-style music performances, classical opera and ballet, award ceremonies, Galas, large-scale entertainment performances, but also a space for cultural and artistic exchange and large-scale entertainment for the capital's residents.

The most distinctive feature of the theater is its “unprecedented” dome architecture, inspired by the ripples of West Lake, with a super thin, super strong structure and covered with a pearl-effect material, to reflect the color of West Lake's water surface according to the movement of time during the day.

Built to host world-class art shows and be a destination for world-famous artists, the Hanoi Opera House is expected to be on the list of the world's most famous art cathedrals in Paris, Milan, Berlin, London, New York, Los Angeles...

This will be a project that demonstrates the values and cultural connections of the world with Vietnamese culture, bringing Vietnam to the world.

Not only is Hanoi a sacred land of history, the political - cultural - economic center of the country, it is also the cradle of many unique cultural values, the spiritual cultural center of the nation.

In addition to preserving the long-standing cultural values of the capital, investing in the development of new cultural institutions such as large-scale theaters, museums, national stages, and a series of key projects such as renovating and building parks on both sides of the To Lich River... are considered important milestones for Hanoi to change its appearance, "becoming a model Socialist Capital, developing on 5 pillars, with culture and people being placed in the first position", as directed by General Secretary To Lam in a working session with the Standing Committee of the Hanoi Party Committee on August 9, 2024.

With the Hanoi Opera House project, architect Renzo Piano had many years to research Hanoi's cultural history before coming up with the design idea.

He brought Hanoi's inspiration into the theater design with a soft West Lake wave-shaped dome, and created more green space for the land associated with historical and cultural heritages.

Ponds and lakes around the area such as the lotus pond of Pho Linh pagoda, Thuy Su lake... will be invested in cleaning, renovating, restoring and planting West Lake lotus to synchronize with the entire park area.

West Lake will also have 8 boat piers and water tourism routes, including a boat pier right near the theater so that people and tourists can conveniently access this iconic cultural and artistic work.

With the investment in space following the green philosophy and honoring the cultural and historical values of the capital, the project complex is expected to become an international art destination, a world-class cultural and entertainment park, bringing to the people of the capital an attractive entertainment spot and an iconic project that world tourists must visit, just as they hope to see the Opera House of Australia.

Accompanying Sun Group to create this extremely challenging project complex, at the groundbreaking ceremony, Vietcombank presented a Letter of Credit Approval to implement the project investment.

More than just a financial partner, Vietcombank's support demonstrates its belief and willingness to contribute to an iconic project of Hanoi.
