Engineer "crazy" about science, makes thousands of billions of dong in profit for thermal power plant

One of the marks of engineer Hoang Thanh Dung (born 1985) - Operation Workshop Manager is the construction of a calibration test program for Vung Ang 1 Thermal Power Plant (Vung Ang Economic Zone).

Previously, every year, to calibrate the factory, the company had to hire foreign experts at a high cost but the results were not as expected. In the context of increasingly scarce design coal sources, forcing the conversion of coal types, Mr. Dung boldly proposed that the Board of Directors of Ha Tinh Oil and Gas Power Company establish an internal testing team, participate in training, research and purchase appropriate equipment to perform the calibration themselves - something unprecedented in history.

In the 2020 - 2025 period, the program saved more than 250,600 tons of coal, equivalent to an economic benefit of about 676 billion VND. In the first 9 months of 2025 alone, the program brought in savings of 195 billion VND.

Vung Ang 1 Thermal Power Plant located in Vung Ang Economic Zone has a capacity of 1,200 MW.

During his 15 years working at Vung Ang 1 Thermal Power Plant, Engineer Dung has led 20 scientific projects that have been effectively applied in production, bringing thousands of billions of VND in benefits to the company. He is currently continuing to develop 3 new projects with great prospects, promising to open up great strides in the operation of the plant.

Having gone through all positions, from furnace operator and now Workshop Operations Manager, engineer Dung has accumulated for himself solid professional qualities, extensive knowledge and technical acumen.

Mr. Dung shared: “The Vietnamese electricity market is characterized by almost fixed selling prices and production costs according to the contract. To improve efficiency, the plant must cut production costs by operating optimally. Vung Ang 1 Thermal Power Plant is a modern coal-fired plant at the time of operation. However, during the long-term operation process, we realized that there are still many issues that can be improved to optimize efficiency and there is a lot of room for this. Previously, many technical problems had to be solved by foreign experts. However, practical operation shows that the plant's staff and engineers - those who directly control the equipment - can completely research, approach and effectively handle those problems. They can even do better because we understand every detail of the system better than anyone else. Therefore, every initiative that my colleagues and I carry out comes from the desire to solve "difficult problems" - so that the entire technical team can learn, grow and progress together. Every morning Successfully applied knowledge also promotes the spirit of continuous improvement. Even small improvements for the better are the basis for making the factory a bright spot in management and operation.

Engineer Hoang Thanh Dung explained during visits to the factory by leaders of Vietnam Electricity Group and Vietnam Oil and Gas Group.

“Each innovative research is a long journey, sometimes lasting several years. The biggest difficulty for researchers is not the technique but the lack of documents and standard data. On that journey, my colleagues and I had to experiment with many solutions, and failed many times. However, fortunately, in all circumstances, we received support from the leaders of the Corporation and the company. We absolutely do not allow ourselves to give up halfway, because only when we persistently pursue it to the end, will the solution be truly effective and highly applicable,” Mr. Dung confided.

Technical "guide"

The central control room is the "brain" of Vung Ang 1 Thermal Power Plant, all parameters must be absolutely accurate. As the Operations Workshop Manager, engineer Dung always closely monitors the parameters of the two units to promptly adjust and optimize the operating status; quickly coordinate and agree on a solution to handle incidents, ensure safety, and quickly bring the units back to a usable state. He regularly evaluates system performance, proposes operating modes to improve efficiency, reduce input costs...

Since being appointed Workshop Manager (in 2019), Engineer Dung has pioneered in building a detailed operating procedure system down to the smallest equipment. The procedure is designed with the criteria of "easy to read - easy to understand - easy to perform", each operation assigns responsibility to each operator. The procedure is always updated and improved based on actual feedback with monthly training sessions. Thanks to that, over the past 5 years, Vung Ang 1 Thermal Power Plant has not recorded any errors from operators causing equipment problems - a rare achievement in the industry.

Not only is he passionate about technology, he is also a teacher and inspiration for young engineers. He regularly “holds hands”, organizes emergency drills, provides technical training and shares practical experiences so that each employee can understand the system and master the equipment.
