Still worried

On the afternoon of September 6, a tragic accident occurred on National Highway 10, passing through An Quang Commune. A worker unfortunately collided with a tractor-trailer while on his way to work the night shift and died on the spot. The incident shocked many colleagues, as traffic accidents have become a constant worry in the workers' journey to make a living.

On Highway 5 through Dai An, Tan Truong, Phuc Dien Industrial Parks (West Hai Phong ), where many factories are concentrated, every hour after work, thousands of workers are seen jostling to cross the road, joining the stream of container trucks and trucks. "Every day on my way home from work, I am afraid to cross the road. I just wish there was an overpass so that workers could travel with peace of mind," said Ms. Nguyen Thi Lan, Iriso Vietnam Electronics Co., Ltd., Tan Truong Industrial Park.

Hai Phong City currently has 42 industrial parks and economic zones attracting nearly 400,000 workers. This is a large labor force, contributing significantly to the city's development. However, the traffic infrastructure system in some areas has not met the travel needs, and there are still many potential traffic complications. Many places have narrow roads and lack pedestrian crossings. In some places, workers have to cross large roads with high traffic volume, many trucks and containers circulating, and a high risk of traffic accidents.

In addition, the traffic awareness of some workers is not good, including many ethnic minority workers working in Hai Phong, causing traffic safety and order in some areas near industrial parks and clusters to not be guaranteed...

Proactively prevent accidents

Faced with this reality, trade unions at all levels and many businesses have proactively implemented many solutions to raise traffic awareness among workers. At VSIP Industrial Park, Y-Tec Vietnam Co., Ltd., in collaboration with the traffic police and the Economic Zone Management Board, regularly organize traffic law propaganda. The propaganda content is closely linked to reality, from safe vehicle control skills, how to handle unexpected situations to wearing helmets properly.

“Before, I just wore a hat carelessly, but after being instructed, I changed my habit. Now when I go out, I always remind myself to be more careful,” said Ms. Tran Thi Loan, Y-Tec Vietnam Co., Ltd.

Many businesses have proactively taken measures to reduce traffic pressure. Sumidenso Vietnam Co., Ltd. (Dai An Industrial Park) requires new workers to attend traffic skills classes before signing labor contracts. Some garment and electronics companies arrange shuttle buses for workers to reduce the number of personal vehicles during rush hours. These measures initially create traffic culture habits among workers, while limiting the risk of accidents.

Recently, the city police force has also stepped up its efforts. In some areas near industrial parks, where there are many workers traveling, during rush hour or rush hour, the police force has arranged working groups to be on duty at intersections to regulate traffic and strictly handle violations.

Along with increased inspection and handling, the city needs to soon complete the traffic infrastructure system around industrial zones. Additional signs and pedestrian crossings need to be added. Research on building more pedestrian overpasses at traffic hotspots on Highway 5 or Highway 10 is an urgent requirement to ensure worker safety.

Traffic safety is not only the responsibility of businesses or authorities but also depends on the awareness of the workers themselves. When each worker voluntarily complies with the law, when businesses proactively propagate and when authorities resolutely take action, the daily commute to and from work will be less of a constant worry, so that workers can feel secure in their commitment to the business, contributing to the development of the Port City.

In the first 8 months of the year, traffic accidents in the city decreased by 3 criteria compared to the same period in 2024, with 598 cases (down 265 cases) causing 315 deaths (down 1 person) and 405 injuries (down 290 people). However, the number of deaths due to accidents only decreased at a low level. Notably, in August, the number of deaths due to traffic accidents increased by 6.67% compared to the same period in 2024.
