The accident occurred late on the night of August 20 in Yazd province, central Iran. According to the preliminary investigation results of the Iranian traffic police, the cause was a technical error in the bus's braking system.

"Unfortunately, 11 women and 17 men were killed in this accident. Seven of the injured are in critical condition and six of the injured have been discharged from hospital," the general director of crisis management in Yazd province told state television.

Pakistan's consulate in Iran has been invited to Yazd province to monitor the situation of the accident, the official added.

"We express our sincere condolences to our brotherly and neighboring country Pakistan and the families of the deceased. The relevant authorities in Iran are actively monitoring the relief and treatment services," Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani posted on X.

Pakistani pilgrims are traveling through Iran to Iraq to take part in the Arbaeen pilgrimage, one of the biggest events in the Shiite calendar marking the 40th anniversary of the death of Imam Hussein, a central figure in Shiite Islam and grandson of the Prophet Muhammad.

Last year, some 22 million pilgrims attended the memorial service at Iraq's shrine city of Karbala, where Hussein and his brother Abbas are buried, according to official figures.
