Liverpool improve comeback record

VnExpressVnExpress28/09/2023

England After conceding an early goal to Leicester, hosts Liverpool scored three goals in the second half to win 3-1 in the third round of the League Cup.

Leicester are top of the English Premier League, but that still isn't a worthy opponent for the second-placed team in the Premier League. The visitors quickly poured cold water on Liverpool in the third minute, after defender Konstantinos Tsimikas slipped and lost the ball dangerously in midfield. Midfielder Kasey McAteer seized the opportunity to rush down and face goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher before shooting low into the far corner to open the scoring. However, that was all Leicester could muster.

Leicester may forget that Liverpool are the kings of comebacks, with five of their six wins coming from behind. Despite using a second-string formation, Liverpool dominated play and created plenty of chances, and it was only a matter of time before they scored.

It was not until the second half that the Anfield crowd could cheer their team's goal, as the new recruits made their mark. In the 48th minute, midfielder Ryan Gravenberch dribbled in the middle and passed into the penalty area for Cody Gakpo to turn and shoot low into the far corner of the net. The Dutch striker may have been offside in this situation, but VAR is not applied in the third round of the League Cup. Leicester players loudly spoke to the linesman, but he did not raise his flag.

For the second goal, it was the turn of rookie midfielder Wataru to make his mark with a through pass to Dominik Szoboszlai who received the ball from about 25 meters away. The Hungarian midfielder turned and fired a powerful shot that hit the underside of the crossbar and into the net. He celebrated by running to the cheering audience, then raised his arms and closed his eyes to enjoy the moment.

The victory was now assured for Liverpool, as Leicester did not create any dangerous chances after the opening goal. The home team also scored another goal in the final minutes thanks to striker Diogo Jota. This was the perfect practice match for Liverpool to meet worthy opponents Tottenham in London in round seven of the Premier League on September 30.
