Black pigs are traditional livestock of people in mountainous areas, and have long been associated with people. However, due to free-range farming practices, economic efficiency is not high.

To improve the efficiency and economic value of the native black pig breed, in San Chu Van village, Thai Giang Pho commune, Bac Ha district (Lao Cai province), a number of poor and near-poor households have joined the black pig farming chain according to product value to develop the economy and escape poverty.

In recent years, implementing the Project on sustainable agricultural development according to Resolution 10 of Lao Cai Provincial Party Committee on developing indigenous black pig farming on a commodity scale, aiming to increase income for people in the highlands, Thai Giang Pho commune authorities have deployed many solutions to support the development of indigenous black pig herds, along with enhancing the brand and value of black pig products.

The black pigs raised by 12 households in San Chu Van village are a rare breed. This breed of pig, with the advantage of adapting well to natural conditions, growing quickly, delicious meat, increasing herd, increasing weight, is superior to other local pig breeds.

From February 2023, Bac Ha District Farmers' Association, together with the Commune Farmers' Association, will deploy and implement the model of "Raising indigenous black pigs that are safe from epidemics, effective and sustainable based on community management".

The model was implemented at San Chu Van village association, aiming to help people switch from traditional livestock farming to biosafety, limit disease risks, know how to organize production, link product consumption to increase income, accelerate sustainable poverty reduction on the spot.

The black pigs' food is mainly rice bran, cooked corn flour and home-grown vegetables. Due to proper care, his family's specialty pigs grow very quickly, after more than 6 months of raising, the average weight is 70kg/pig, the meat quality is good so it can be sold at a higher price and is easy to consume.

Mr. Luc Seo Diu, San Chu Van village, Thai Giang Pho commune expressed: To have a good herd of pigs, first of all we have to choose pigs with big limbs and big ears. When we bring them home to raise, we only mix corn bran with forest plants, the raising period is quite long.

Along with that, I have to go buy medicine at the veterinary station to get vaccinated to prevent disease. Before I didn’t participate in the model, I would sell to anyone who came to my house to ask to buy, otherwise I would slaughter and bring it to the market to sell. Now that I participate in the model, when I post for sale, there are many customers, and the price is 2-3 times higher than the market price…

In order for the model of raising black pigs for specialties based on product linkage value to continue to be supported to develop in the right direction and sustainably, bringing high income to farmers, the commune government has also been proactive and closely monitoring the project implementation, creating conditions for people to successfully implement the project.

Many households exchange and learn experiences in raising native black pigs and specialty pigs in Thai Giang Pho commune, Bac Ha district, Lao Cai province.

Initial results such as good pig herds, few diseases, etc. have shown that the black pig farming model according to the product value chain is suitable for the development orientation of the locality's specific value chain.

Mr. Hoang Manh Thang, Vice Chairman of Thai Giang Pho Commune People's Committee (Bac Ha District, Lao Cai Province) said: After more than 1 year of implementing the black pig farming model here, it has helped more than 10 households develop their economy, along with that, receiving a source of breed to help people be self-sufficient in the village, not buying from outside to avoid spreading disease.

In addition, direct the Women's Union, Farmers' Union and other departments and organizations to actively propagate and mobilize people to actively visit and learn from the experiences of models in localities. In the coming time, Thai Giang Pho commune, Bac Ha district, Lao Cai province will also promote the establishment of a farmer cooperative group to link up to raise safe, biosafety pigs based on the community.

The locality continues to support groups to access preferential loans to invest in raising specialty pigs in the direction of commodities, creating jobs right in the locality, helping households increase their income, escape poverty sustainably; together with the Party Committee and the government, successfully implement the poverty reduction target of 11.42%/year.
